Description
Chen Guizhang is the son of Yaowen Chen, a wealthy Chinese magnate and martial arts master operating a Yokosuka Harbor trading business. Born February 10, 1956, he stands 175 cm tall and typically wears a dark grey pinstripe suit (lacking pinstripes in some adaptations), red tie, and black dress shoes. His upbringing involved frequent global travel with his father, resulting in fluency in Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, English, and Russian. His early education focused on moral values and business philosophy under Master Chen.

He practices the family martial art Yan Qing Quan, striving to match his father's skill. His hobbies include billiards, dancing—which he connects to martial arts rhythms—and savoring Sichuan cuisine, especially tantan-mian ramen and prawns with chili sauce (GanShaoMinXia). Reserved yet observant, he displays a logical and mature demeanor. Initially critical of Ryo Hazuki's quest for vengeance, he later empathizes upon recognizing their shared values of justice and filial duty. His deep respect for his father causes tension when Master Chen insists on formality during business.

After Ryo seeks Master Chen's help investigating his father's murder, Chen Guizhang initially questions assisting him but later acts as Ryo's covert bodyguard under his father's orders. When the Mad Angels gang kidnaps Ryo's friend Nozomi, their leader, Terry Ryan, demands Ryo defeat Chen Guizhang in exchange for information about Lan Di. Their fight ends in a stalemate; when Terry betrays them, they unite to defeat the 70-man gang. Chen Guizhang subsequently arranges Ryo's boat passage to Hong Kong. On departure day, he suffers a leg injury saving Ryo from a steel beam dropped by Lan Di's underling, Chai, forcing him to stay in Japan for recovery while Ryo departs.

Though physically absent later, his influence remains. Recordings of his conversations with Joy are found among Huang the Wiretapper's cassettes in Hong Kong. During a campfire discussion in Guilin, Ryo can recount Chen Guizhang's story to Shenhua Ling. While recovering, he maintains contact with Ryo; in a later phone call, he asks about Ryo's meeting with martial artist "Lishao Tao" (Xiuying Hong), expressing surprise upon learning her true identity and stating his wish to meet her.

In animated adaptations, his role expands: he ambushes Ryo to test his skills under Master Chen's directive, later serving openly as his bodyguard. He aids Ryo and Master Chen in recovering the Phoenix Mirror from Chai. Master Chen later curtails Chen Guizhang's protection to avoid escalating tensions with Lan Di's organization, highlighting the conflict between his duty to his father and his desire to help Ryo.
