He serves as a judge of deceased souls, presiding over afterlife realms and determining reincarnation outcomes based on mortal deeds. Assimilated into Buddhist cosmology as a dharmapala (wrathful guardian), he governs narakas (hell realms) and is syncretized with Jizō Bosatsu (Kṣitigarbha), reflecting a dualistic nature as both fearsome judge and compassionate savior.
