Description
Konaki-Jijii is a yōkai with a distinctive appearance, combining the body of a large infant with the face of an elderly man featuring drooping eyebrows and a mustache. He is typically dressed in a Kintarō apron and a mino straw coat, with some depictions showing a blackened front tooth.

Legends from Tokushima Prefecture describe him luring travelers by mimicking a crying baby in remote mountains. Once picked up, he clings to the victim and drastically increases his weight—reaching at least 188 kg and potentially hundreds of tons—crushing them to death. Variations include the single-legged Gogya-Naki, whose cries may cause earthquakes, and the Konaki-Babaa, resembling an infant with an old woman's face and possessing similar weight-changing abilities.

A core ally of Kitarō, Konaki-Jijii is a steadfast member of the Kitarō Family and the 47 Yōkai Warriors, representing Tokushima Prefecture. His primary combat ability involves manipulating his weight by transforming his body—partially or fully—into stone, immobilizing or crushing opponents. This grants significant durability in petrified form and offensive power through kinetic energy strikes. Additional attributes include low-level regeneration, potential immortality allowing recovery from fatal injuries over time, invisibility, soul manipulation, resistance to heat and blood manipulation, and non-physical interaction. Weaknesses include immobility while fully petrified and vulnerability due to chronic drunkenness.

His personality blends comic relief and loyalty; he is often portrayed as absent-minded, frequently intoxicated, and prone to poor decisions. He maintains a close, ambiguous relationship with Sunakake-Babaa, with instances implying romantic involvement, such as her displays of jealousy. His advanced age—over 3,100 years—contributes to low stamina and excessive sleeping. Despite these traits, he remains a dedicated fighter for human-yōkai coexistence.

Narrative developments include his initial death during the Great Yōkai War in early manga and anime adaptations, sacrificing himself to drown an enemy (Frankenstein or Wolfman) by increasing his weight on a raft. He was later revived without explanation, becoming a recurring character. Across different series, he exhibits financial stability—owning luxury items and a personal computer—and familial ties, such as a distant relationship with a human politician. His narrative roles involve team-based missions, including baseball tournaments and yōkai rallies, often collaborating with Sunakake-Babaa and other allies.
