Description
Neko-Musume is a half-yōkai character, specifically a cat hanyō originating from Japanese bakeneko folklore. She belongs to the Kitarō Family and lives in the GeGeGe Forest. Debuting in the 1967 manga story "Nezumi-Otoko and Neko-Musume," she first appeared in anime in 1968. Her origins sometimes involve a curse or hereditary trait causing involuntary transformations triggered by fish or rats, though her half-yōkai status varies in emphasis. In continuities like "Zoku GeGeGe no Kitarō," she attends Bizarre Women's University and later Under the Grave High School. Her age is typically one year older than Kitarō, with a usual height of 136 cm and weight of 29 kg.

Her appearance evolved significantly. Early designs featured a bowl-cut without her ribbon; later adaptations solidified the pink bow projecting cat-ear silhouettes. Outfits vary, like the red polka-dot dress in the second anime or the modernized, feminine looks in the fifth and sixth series. The 2018 adaptation increased her height, adding red stiletto heels, sheer pantyhose, and pointed ears that droop when distressed. This version also emphasized a grotesque battle form with enlarged fangs, yellow eyes, and a flattened nose. Art evolution across media progressively refined her from slightly grotesque to conventionally cute.

Her abilities center on the bake-neko form, activated by anger, fish, or encounters with rats, granting razor-sharp claws, cat-like reflexes, and quadrupedal combat prowess. The 2018 series showed greater control, allowing strategic use in battle while maintaining awareness. Her combat style involves frenzied scratching and howling, with instincts overriding speech when fully transformed. Additional skills include crafting "catnip mochi" to calm felines and using her ribbon as a multipurpose tool. Her half-yōkai physiology enables slow aging, highlighted in storylines where spells amplify her desire for human-like maturation.

Personality traits include a persistent, often unreciprocated romantic interest in Kitarō, leading to tsundere behaviors in later series like 2018. She displays fierce loyalty to the Kitarō Family but intense animosity toward Nezumi-Otoko, frequently punishing his schemes. Characterization varies: early portrayals show her as polite and doting, cooking for Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji; the third series emphasizes jealousy toward human rivals like Yumeko Tendō. The fifth series humanizes her through part-time jobs under aliases like Hiromi Nekota, showcasing familiarity with human society and friendships with humans and yōkai like Rokuro-Kubi. Despite a generally kind demeanor, she is prone to violent outbursts when provoked or when Kitarō interacts with other females.

Key narrative arcs involve punishing Nezumi-Otoko, leading to comedic or violent confrontations. In "Zoku GeGeGe no Kitarō," she attempts to displace Nezumi-Otoko to live with Kitarō but gets trapped in a book due to his scheming. The fourth anime series explores her half-yōkai identity when a spell temporarily reverts her to a human girl holding a cat. The 2018 series amplifies her combat role, depicting coordinated battles alongside Kitarō against threats like Yasha. Recurring themes include her struggle with identity prejudice, occasionally deriding Nezumi-Otoko's half-human heritage despite her own hybrid status, and her desire for acceptance within both human and yōkai societies.
