Description
Usui Horokeu, known as Horohoro, is an Ainu youth from Hokkaidō, Japan, born November 27, 1985. His tribe selected him to compete in the Shaman Fight to save their village, carrying his personal dream to cultivate a vast butterbur field for the koropokkuru spirits. He is the son of Usui Lycan and older brother of Usui Pirika.
Horohoro's childhood included a friendship with Kurobe Tamiko, nicknamed Damuko, whose family arrived to build a dam threatening the local environment. Forbidden by Ainu elders to associate with her due to her family's role, he severed contact without explanation. Damuko later pursued him into the mountains and succumbed to exposure. Horohoro blamed himself, unaware her spirit transformed into the koropokkuru Kororo, who became his guardian ghost and spirit ally.
His signature attire is a white and blue skiing outfit with Ainu-patterned accessories, including a headband. He wields a hand-carved snowboard as his primary spiritual medium. His battle gear, crafted by Pirika, includes black gloves, boots, and a sleeveless jacket marked with red Ainu symbols like "Morew-siriki" and "Ay-us-siriki," designed for hunting.
Personality-wise, Horohoro is cheerful and good-natured, shifting to seriousness in danger. He frequently clashes with teammate Tao Ren yet exhibits deep loyalty, urging Yoh Asakura to save Ren during a crisis. He fiercely protects his Ainu heritage and deeply respects nature, intervening to safeguard living beings and ecosystems, such as preventing a national park's destruction. He harbors a crush on Iron Maiden Jeanne, reacting with visible blushing and excitement near her. While responsible and capable of caring for himself and Pirika, he is sensitive about his past and becomes enraged when his birth name is used.
Horohoro's abilities focus on cryokinesis, using his 120,000 furyoku units to manipulate atmospheric moisture into ice. His primary techniques channel Kororo into mediums:
- His initial Over Soul fused Kororo with his snowboard, enabling ice attacks like "Nipopo Punch" and "Epittarki Upas-Horkkek" (All-Swallowing Avalanche).
- After receiving an ikupasuy (Ainu prayer stick) from Pirika, he formed a second Over Soul creating an icy shield for faster freezing.
- Trained by Pascal Avaf, he developed "Nipopo Gauntlets," armored gauntlets enabling advanced techniques like "Shimonmataki: Rupushikateku" (defensive freezing) and "Shushu Waki: Kamuiranke Opukeni" (offensive flash-freezing).
Later, Gandhara identified him as one of the Five Elemental Warriors, granting the Spirit of Rain. This enhanced his ice manipulation, allowing large-scale attacks like "Porowaok Ererupus Shinupuri," summoning massive icicles.
In the Shaman Fight preliminaries, Horohoro's first match was against Yoh Asakura at Tokyo's Sunshine 60 building. After losing, he qualified for later rounds and joined Team "The Ren" with Ren and Chocolove McDonnell. He aided in rescuing Ren from his father in China, freezing Tao En's elite guards during the confrontation.
Traveling through America, Horohoro encountered poachers who killed a bear named Apollo. Enraged by their disrespect for nature, he spared their lives after freezing the surrounding forest, marking his growth beyond vengeance and solidifying his resolve to become Shaman King. During the tournament's final stages, he battled opponents like Brocken Meyer and Bill Burton, protecting the Icemen and honing his "Shamanic Oracle" technique to dodge attacks by reading furyoku flow. His development culminated in harmonizing with Kororo, overcoming his guilt over Damuko's death, and adopting a calmer, more focused combat demeanor.
