Description
Burns, an American soldier stationed in Greece during the mid-to-late 20th century, encounters Porphy after a devastating earthquake destroys Simitra village. He delivers pivotal news to the boy, confirming the deaths of Christophore and Anek Patagos—Porphy's parents—during the disaster, resolving all uncertainty about their fate.

Driven by compassion, Burns assumes temporary guardianship of Porphy. He arranges for the boy to reside with his own family at the military base while recovery efforts unfold in the earthquake-stricken region. A dedicated family man, Burns is married with three children named John, Tom, and Mary. His sheltering of Porphy highlights his empathy amid the surrounding chaos.

Burns' role centers exclusively on the earthquake's immediate aftermath, providing Porphy fleeting stability during profound loss. He does not reappear in Porphy's later journey across Europe to locate Mina.
