Movie
Description
Atsushi Dōjō serves as a First Lieutenant librarian and the captain of the special unit known as the Dōjō Squad within the Library Defense Force. Despite his short stature, standing at approximately 165 centimeters or 5 feet 4 inches, this physical characteristic does not diminish his capabilities as a superior officer in both combat and standard library administrative work. His height becomes a recurring personal detail, though his presence and authority are never defined by it.

As a leader, Dōjō is known for being strict and having a straightforward, no-nonsense character. He consistently pushes his subordinates to their limits, with his harshest training reserved for new recruit Iku Kasahara, which earns him the reputation of a demon instructor. His rigid and earnest demeanor makes him an easy target for teasing by other officers, though he is typically calm and composed. That composure, however, frequently breaks when the situation involves Iku.

The core of Dōjō's personal history is tied to a significant event that occurred five years before the main story begins. While on duty, he witnessed a high school girl, Iku Kasahara, risking her own safety to protect a stack of books from being confiscated and destroyed. Moved by her bravery, Dōjō used his authority as a library officer to demand the books be returned, an act that Iku perceived as heroic and which inspired her to join the Library Force. However, this unauthorized use of his position was considered humiliating by his superiors, subjecting Dōjō to numerous trials and a damaged reputation. While he decided he would never take such a reckless action again, he privately admitted he had no regrets for helping her.

This past incident heavily shapes Dōjō's motivations and his present-day interactions. When he interviews Iku for the Library Force, he immediately recognizes her as the girl from five years ago, though she does not remember him. Upon learning that his heroic act was the direct reason she chose this dangerous profession, he begins to blame himself. Consequently, his harsh treatment of Iku is not born from cruelty but from a misguided attempt to make her quit and save her from the risks of the job.

Despite his outwardly gruff and critical behavior, Dōjō cares for Iku more deeply than any of his other subordinates. Throughout the story, his feelings gradually soften, and he shows his affection through subtle, physical gestures, most notably patting her on the head whenever she is sad, discouraged, or deserves praise. This gesture becomes a signature expression of his care. His relationship with Iku evolves from a strict superior-subordinate dynamic into a mutual romantic interest, and by the conclusion of The Wings of Revolution, their relationship progresses to marriage.

Beyond his central relationship with Iku, Dōjō maintains key relationships with other officers. He shares a close bond with Mikihisa Komaki, a classmate and best friend from their academy days; they were rivals for the top position before becoming friends through their shared service in the Library Defense Force. His family background includes a younger sister named Shizuka, who is older than Iku and described as having a strong personality.

In his role within the story, Dōjō is a captain who leads by example, demonstrating deep dedication to protecting intellectual freedom. During the central crisis of The Wings of Revolution, he spearheads the mission to protect author Kurato Touma, whose novel has been targeted by censorship authorities. In this operation, Dōjō sustains a gunshot wound to the leg while facilitating the author's escape, yet he remains focused on the mission even as he recuperates. His commitment to the cause is unwavering, though he sometimes takes personal risks, balancing this with a priority on team coordination and following protocols when directing his squad. His notable abilities include high proficiency in combat and field operations alongside his competence in routine library office work. By the end of the film's events, following legislative reforms that prohibit weapon use, he and Iku are shown serving jointly as instructors for new Library Defense Force recruits.
