Description
Jinmen is a demon who appears as a recurring antagonist. He is a large, bipedal creature resembling a turtle or tortoise, possessing a muscular physique, a forked tongue, and a sharp beak. His most distinctive feature is his shell, which displays the screaming, agonized faces of the beings he has devoured, who remain conscious and trapped in a state of living death.
Jinmen is defined by extreme sadism and cruelty. Unlike many demons who simply kill, he derives pleasure from the psychological torment and perpetual suffering of his victims, keeping them alive on his shell to hear their screams. He uses the trapped faces as shields and to manipulate his enemies emotionally, taunting them with the visages of their loved ones. However, when he loses the upper hand in battle, Jinmen is also shown to be cowardly, begging for mercy from his adversary. His primary motivation is the infliction of pain and the expansion of his gruesome collection, as he adds the faces of those he consumes to his shell.
Within the story, Jinmen serves as a personal and traumatic foe for the protagonist. In his first appearance, he kills and absorbs Sachiko, a young friend of Akira Fudo, which directly brings him into conflict with Akira as Devilman. Jinmen taunts Akira with Sachiko’s face on his shell, forcing the hero to make the anguished decision to strike through her to defeat the demon. This event cements Jinmen as a figure who attacks Akira’s humanity. In other versions of the story, Jinmen also devours Akira’s mother, making the conflict even more personal.
Jinmen has notable relationships with other demons, sometimes working alongside them, such as Aleda, to achieve his goals. Even among demonkind, his cruelty is often seen as exceptional. After being killed by Devilman, Jinmen’s story continues as he appears in Hell, where his powers intensify and he gains new abilities like enhanced flight and beams of electricity from his shell. He continues to serve as an enemy in later series, such as Devilman Lady, and in various alternate continuities and spin-offs, including Devilman Grimoire, where he is depicted as being equally or even more vicious.
Jinmen possesses a range of supernatural abilities. He has immense strength and durability, and can extend his limbs and neck to great lengths. He can burn flesh with the palms of his hands and is capable of flight by ejecting flames from his shell, sometimes spinning like a saw blade. His signature ability is to devour living beings and fuse their still-conscious faces onto his shell, effectively holding their souls prisoner. He also has minor shapeshifting abilities and can blend in with living tissue.
