Seiji Yasaka, a ronin seeking to become a doctor, takes a part-time job washing corpses at a hospital to pursue his medical ambitions. While working there, he develops feelings for Nurse Yūki Midō, while the hospital's deputy director, Chigusa Tsuyusaki, expresses a possessive romantic interest in him. His view of the hospital shatters when he discovers the nursing staff are reanimated corpses, part of an experiment to restore the dead to life. He subsequently realizes he himself is already deceased and part of the same project. Following this revelation, Seiji experiences significant mental and physical degeneration. His mind decays progressively, a consequence of reanimation where the body functions but the psyche deteriorates. His psychological state, marked by the conviction of his own death despite continuing existence, reflects symptoms analogous to Cotard's syndrome.
