Following his granddaughter Hinata's (later revealed as Otoha) drowning death, he orchestrated a coldly calculated scheme to preserve the family's status. He forced his younger granddaughter, Hotaru, to permanently assume Hinata's identity. Simultaneously, he deceived villagers into believing Hotaru had died. He enforced this identity swap without visible remorse, demanding the traumatized Hotaru relinquish her own life and fulfill her deceased sister's role. He maintained rigid control over Hotaru, confined her movements, and expressed intense fury when she later attempted to reclaim her original identity. Externally, he cultivated a facade of a benevolent patriarch concerned for his granddaughter's welfare and village stability. Internally, his motivations were strictly pragmatic and self-serving; he viewed family members solely as instruments for consolidating his authority. He actively suppressed Hotaru's personal autonomy, demanding complete subservience to the family's perceived interests, which directly served his own power. His actions culminated in a direct confrontation with Hotaru. After his attempt on Hayami's life, Hotaru took decisive action by contacting the police. She explicitly stated her intent to expose his crimes, including the theft of the hunting rifle used in the attack and his presence at the scene. During this confrontation, she defiantly declared the village did not belong to him, symbolizing her rejection of his authority and corrupt values. This defiance led directly to his arrest for attempted murder.
