Description
Hikari Hanazono, driven by an intense rivalry with Kei Takishima, seeks to surpass him after her first defeat at age six in a pro-wrestling match left her humiliated. To challenge Kei academically and athletically, she convinced her carpenter father to enroll her in the costly Hakusen Academy. She consistently ranks second in the school, just below top-ranked Kei, who provokes her with the nickname "Miss Rank Two," fueling her determination.
Slender and standing 155 cm tall, Hikari has long black hair, usually worn down, and black eyes. She wears the S.A uniform: a white blazer over a pale green polo shirt with a tie, a dark blue skirt, knee-high socks, and brown shoes. For athletics, she ties her hair in pigtails and dons an orange T-shirt with white sweatpants featuring orange stripes. As a child, she had twin tails and wore a red dress over a white turtleneck.
Hikari combines fierce competitiveness with kindness and optimism. Energetic, hardworking, and honorable, she refuses underhanded tactics and condemns cheating. She supports friends and strives to foster happiness. However, she lacks common sense and misses subtle social cues, especially romantic advances, remaining oblivious to Kei's clear feelings. Her straightforward nature and tendency to see the best in people sometimes blind her to harsh realities or underlying tensions.
Academically gifted but flawed in practical skills, she excels in sports and academics due to rigorous training from her father. She is notably terrible at cooking and teaching. Her wrestling background equips her for physical confrontations, often worrying Kei when she endangers herself. She has an older brother, Atsushi, and a younger, unnamed sister rarely mentioned.
Hikari's relationship with Kei evolves significantly. Initially seeing him only as a rival, she remains unaware of his lifelong romantic interest despite his attempts to convey it. Her own feelings begin unconsciously in the manga's fourth volume, unrecognized as love until volume six when he departs for London. After mutual confessions, they start dating in chapter 53 and become engaged in chapter 91. She declines his marriage proposal in the final chapter, vowing to marry him only after defeating him, maintaining her competitive spirit as his fiancée.
Within the S.A class, her closest bond is with supportive best friend Akira Tōdō. She develops a friendly rivalry with Iori Tokiwa, who ties Kei for first place. Iori's admiration for her determination leads to collaboration in a styling competition, though his romantic interest triggers Kei's jealousy. Her interactions with other S.A members—Jun, Megumi, Tadashi, and Ryū—highlight her role as a unifying force, encouraging them through struggles and fostering group cohesion.
Her development culminates in balancing her rivalry with Kei alongside their romantic relationship. She remains steadfast in her goal to surpass him, symbolizing her core identity valuing hard work, integrity, and perseverance.
