Description
Lunamaria Hawke, a Coordinator born in the PLANTs, experienced the First Alliance-PLANT War as a child. This influenced her decision to join the ZAFT military academy alongside her younger sister Meyrin Hawke, Shinn Asuka, Rey Za Burrel, Vino Dupre, and Yolant Kent. Her academy training revealed strong observational skills, leading to graduation with honors and a third-place ranking behind Rey and Shinn, with particular excellence in marksmanship and long-range combat.

Assigned as a mobile suit pilot to the ZAFT battleship Minerva, she joined Shinn and Rey in the ship's elite combat team. She piloted a customized red ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior equipped with a Gunner Wizard pack, reflecting her long-range artillery specialization. Her initial missions included responding to mobile suit theft at Armory One, engaging Phantom Pain forces alongside Shinn and Rey.

During the Minerva's early operations, Lunamaria encountered Athrun Zala, using the alias "Alex Dino" as a bodyguard for Orb representative Cagalli Yula Athha. She developed a noticeable interest in Athrun, creating occasional tension with Meyrin, who also admired him. After Athrun rejoined ZAFT as a FAITH officer aboard the Minerva, Lunamaria attempted to connect with him, efforts complicated by the presence of Lacus Clyne impersonator Meer Campbell.

Captain Talia Gladys later assigned Lunamaria a covert mission to spy on Athrun meeting the Archangel crew. Using a reconnaissance helicopter, she documented the encounter, discovering Meer was an impostor and the real Lacus Clyne allied with the Archangel. Lunamaria reported her findings to Captain Gladys but omitted the revelation about Lacus, keeping it confidential as ordered. This seeded doubts within her about ZAFT's leadership and Athrun's loyalties.

Lunamaria participated in multiple battles during the Second Alliance-PLANT War, including the defense of the submarine Nyiragongo and the assault on the Gulnahan Ravine. Her ZAKU Warrior suffered severe damage during the Battle of Crete, leaving her injured and sidelined during Operation Angel Down. After recovery, she was reassigned to pilot the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam following Shinn's promotion to the Destiny Gundam.

A significant emotional turning point occurred when ZAFT accused Athrun and Meyrin of defection, reporting Shinn destroyed their escape mobile suit. Initially devastated and in denial, Lunamaria ultimately forgave Shinn, recognizing he followed orders. This shared trauma deepened their bond, leading to a romantic relationship. Before the assault on Heaven's Base, they shared a kiss, and Shinn vowed to protect her in battle.

During the final Battle of Messiah, Lunamaria fought in the Impulse against Athrun piloting the Infinite Justice. Blaming him for endangering Meyrin, she was overpowered until Shinn intervened. When Shinn entered SEED mode and attacked Athrun, Lunamaria positioned her damaged mobile suit between them to halt the fight. Athrun ultimately rescued both stranded pilots after the battle. She later attended a memorial ceremony in Orb alongside Shinn, Athrun, Meyrin, Kira Yamato, and Lacus Clyne.

Post-war, Lunamaria continued military service with COMPASS, dedicated to peacekeeping operations. She piloted mobile suits under the Millennium's command alongside Shinn and Kira. During a mission against Blue Cosmos, she intercepted and destroyed a nuclear missile targeting Foundation's capital, though a second missile struck the city. She later engaged Foundation's elite Black Knights, including a confrontation with Agnes Gibenrath, during the final offensive to stop the Requiem superweapon.
