Description
Yzak Joule is a second-generation Coordinator from Martius City. His mother, Ezalia Joule, serves on the PLANT Supreme Council's National Defense Committee and supports Patrick Zala's radical faction. This elite heritage fostered deep pride in his Coordinator identity and fierce loyalty to PLANT. He joined ZAFT alongside Athrun Zala, graduating second in his class and earning the red elite pilot uniform. Assigned to the Le Creuset Team, he participated in the Heliopolis raid, captured the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, and developed a heated rivalry with Athrun.
Yzak's fiery temper and competitive drive defined his actions during the First Junius War. He sustained a facial scar from Kira Yamato's Strike Gundam in an early skirmish and vowed to keep it until avenged. His impulsiveness led to a critical error at the Battle of Orbit, where he destroyed a civilian shuttle mistakenly believed to carry enemy combatants, resulting in over a hundred civilian deaths. This tragedy haunted him, though he remained unaware of the victims' identities until later. Witnessing atrocities like the gleeful slaughter of defenseless Earth Alliance pilots during the Battle of Panama eroded his faith in ZAFT's leadership.
A turning point came during Operation Spit-Break when Kira, piloting the Freedom Gundam, spared Yzak's life and warned him of the impending Cyclops System detonation. Later, at Mendel colony, Yzak learned Kira was both the Freedom's pilot and his former adversary, profoundly challenging his worldview. During the Second Battle of Jachin Due, he aligned with the Three Ship Alliance, destroying Extended pilots and enemy commanders to prevent GENESIS's firing. Post-war, he faced court-martial for the shuttle incident but was acquitted due to battlefield fog-of-war, aided by Chairman Gilbert Durendal's intervention.
In the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Yzak commanded the elite Joule Team, demonstrating greater level-headedness and mentorship. He healed his facial scar, symbolically ending his grudge against Kira. Promoted to commander, he led the prototype battleship Minerva during the Junius Seven demolition operation. Haunted by his past mistake, he prioritized protecting a civilian shuttle during the mission. His bond with fellow veteran pilot Shiho Hahnenfuss deepened; he gave her the nickname "Housenka" and entrusted her with command of the Voltaire and Rousseau. Though he publicly denied romantic involvement, their mutual respect and shared command responsibilities were evident.
By the Foundation Conflict, Yzak fought to uphold righteous principles, protecting allies like the Eternal from ZAFT fleets. His mother, Ezalia, moderated her genocidal views and endorsed Shiho as his partner. Yzak piloted several mobile suits, including the Duel Gundam (with Assault Shroud), ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior, ZGMF-2000 GOUF Ignited, YMF-3000 DOM Trooper, and ZGMF-1001/K Slash ZAKU Phantom. Specializing in close-quarters combat with beam sabers and the Falx beam axe, he adapted to ranged tactics when necessary. His evolution from a brash soldier to a principled leader reflected his commitment to protecting PLANT without sacrificing his honor.
