Twelve-year-old Mayuki Hyūga lives in Kyuto, the city rebuilt from Tokyo's ruins after a devastating earthquake three decades ago. He possesses exceptional problem-solving skills and extrasensory perception, enabling him to solve supernatural "phantom cases" that confound regular police. His background is intentionally obscured, with no formal schooling prior to the series' start. Despite genius-level intellect in most academic subjects, he struggles with physical education.
Mayuki has blond hair, blue eyes, and an innocent, doll-like appearance. He typically wears refined clothing: a cravat, frilled shirt, vest, and three-quarter-length pants. He resides in a Western-style mansion under the care of his butler, Seiran Shinano, and maid, Hatsumi Mieno. Seiran, later revealed as Mayuki's maternal uncle, promised Mayuki's mother, Shara Hyūga (who resides in Switzerland), to protect him.
