Description
Hang Zang-Ching was born March 16, 1966, in Shanghai, China, to a family of doctors. Excelling academically, he nevertheless developed a significant complex about his weight, profoundly impacting his self-esteem. This insecurity surfaced early when rejections for his pop idol aspirations stemmed solely from his appearance. His life changed at a zoo encounter with Shion-Shion, the spirit of a deceased giant panda killed after escaping and attacking people. A heartfelt conversation comparing Shion-Shion's lack of freedom despite popularity with his own self-loathing despite ample freedom forged a bond, making Shion-Shion his guardian ghost. The gong he would wield as his shamanic medium was Shion-Shion's favorite toy.

Motivated in 1990 by a desire to create a world where appearance held no importance, he joined Asakura Hao, becoming part of Team "Tsuki-Gumi". Responsibilities included managing the group's food supplies, emphasizing their non-reliance on money. By 1995, he camped in Tokyo with Hao's followers, warning new recruit Bill Burton against challenging the group. The next year, he traveled with Hao to South Africa, aiding in rescuing Opacho and living nomadically with local shepherds.

Physically, Hang is an obese Chinese man with long, pointed eyebrows and a Fu Manchu mustache. Distinguishing features include a large red tattoo on his stomach and small, round-framed sunglasses, later replaced with angular frames after Tao Ren broke the original pair. He typically appears shirtless, exposing his stomach, wearing black kung fu pants, black armbands, black Chinese-style shoes, and a white obi. In public, he dons a dark green Chinese military suit with a red scarf and hat. Five years prior to the Shaman Fight, he was heavier, with short light-colored hair, wearing casual attire like a Hawaiian shirt and black shorts.

His personality reflects deep-seated insecurities from societal rejection. He deemed friendship unnecessary, believing only Hao's vision could eradicate a world where people faced ridicule for appearance. This conviction made him dismissive of ideals like non-violence, exemplified when he stabbed Gandhara leader Sati Saigan to prove her pacifism futile against Hao's methods.

As a shaman, his furyoku measured 7,000. He utilized Shion-Shion, forming the Oversoul "Dokurama Neko" or "Drachma Neko", manifesting the panda's face and claws on his gong. His combat style involved close and long-range attacks with the gong. His arsenal included "Black Panda's Hand" (spectral claws), "Double Black Panda's Hands" (after splitting the gong), "Panda Bomb" (explosive gong throws), and "Black Panda's Bomb" (chain-attached gong strikes). Hao personally taught him "Shamanic Oracle" (Fumon Tonkou), enabling him to read furyoku flows, predict opponents' movements, and significantly enhance his speed.

During the Shaman Fight tournament, Hang participated in the preliminary rounds, winning two matches to advance. In the main competition, he and other followers ambushed rival teams under Hao's orders. He clashed repeatedly with Team "Funbari Onsen", mocking opponents like Horohoro and Chocolove while exploiting their psychological vulnerabilities. Despite tactical retreats and losses—overpowered by Umemiya Ryunosuke and defeated by Yoh Asakura—he remained loyal to Hao. His loyalty wavered only once during a mission against human warships; after teammates Peyote Diaz and Mohamed Tabarsi questioned Hao's motives, Hang expressed fear. This hesitation led Peyote to kill him with the Oversoul "Grande Fantasma".

Following Hao's ascension as Shaman King, Hang was revived inside the Great Spirit and joined others requesting Hao resurrect all casualties. Post-revival, he experienced burnout and lacked motivation until Tao Ren recruited him several years later to work for the Leidi Group (Raitei Group), an electronics company. He rose through the ranks alongside fellow Hao followers Bill Burton and Brocken Meyer, eventually becoming a personal bodyguard for Ren, Jun Tao, and Ren's son, Men Tao. During the events of "Red Crimson", he, Bill, and Brocken escorted Men when assailants attacked the Tao family apartment, resulting in Jeanne Tao's death. Afterward, they observed Ren comforting Men and discussed the potential fallout with the Tao family and Jun.

Alternate adaptations, such as the 2001 anime, reduced his role, often pairing him with Turbine and depicting earlier defeat by Tao Ren, while simplifying his name to "Zang-Ching".
