Description
Toji Suzuhara is a student at Tokyo-3 Junior High School, classmates with Shinji Ikari, Kensuke Aida, and Hikari Horaki. He resides with his father, grandfather, and younger sister Sakura Suzuhara, primarily caring for Sakura due to his father's NERV employment. After debris from Evangelion Unit-01's battle with the Fourth Angel Sachiel injures Sakura, Toji confronts and punches Shinji upon learning he pilots the Eva. Witnessing Shinji's traumatic fight against the Fifth Angel Shamshel firsthand from inside Unit-01's entry plug shifts Toji's perspective; seeing Shinji's suffering and breakdown leads to regret. He apologizes and solidifies their friendship by inviting Shinji to punch him back, revealing his protective nature, especially towards family.
In the original *Neon Genesis Evangelion* series, Toji becomes the Fourth Child to pilot Evangelion Unit-03, accepting to secure advanced NERV medical care for Sakura. During activation, the Angel Bardiel infects Unit-03. Unaware Toji is inside, Shinji refuses to fight, but the Dummy System forces Unit-01 to destroy Unit-03, crushing its entry plug. Toji survives with critical injuries, losing his left leg. Evacuated before Tokyo-3's destruction, his ultimate fate remains ambiguous beyond Instrumentality appearances. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's manga adaptation diverges: Shinji knows Toji is the pilot before the battle, and Toji dies when the entry plug crushes.
The *Rebuild of Evangelion* films alter Toji's path. His early interactions with Shinji in *Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone* and *Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance* mirror the original—initial hostility, reconciliation, and friendship—but he avoids piloting Unit-03. Asuka Langley Shikinami pilots the Bardiel-infected Unit-03 instead. Toji visits Sakura on her hospital discharge day and last appears shielding Hikari during the Tenth Angel's attack. He is absent in *Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo*; Shinji finds a shirt with Toji's name tag, implying potential loss.
Toji returns as an adult in *Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time*, living in Village-3. He works as an unlicensed doctor for the community and is married to Hikari Horaki, now Hikari Suzuhara; they have a daughter, Tsubame Suzuhara. Both Toji and Kensuke Aida assist Shinji's recovery without resentment. Toji shows initial confusion upon encountering a Rei Ayanami lookalike, failing to recognize her as a different entity. When the Wunder arrives for Asuka, Toji urges Shinji to stay and live peacefully in the village. His final scene shows him embracing Hikari and Tsubame during the world's transformation.
