Description
Rei Ayanami (tentative name) emerges in *Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo* as a replacement clone from the Ayanami Series after the previous Rei's demise in *Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance*. Identified as Ayanami-Type No.006 in *Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time*, she is one of multiple clones derived from Yui Ikari's DNA, serving as a vessel for the Angel Lilith's soul under Gendo Ikari's command. Genetically human yet initially lacking emotional depth or personal memories, she functions solely to execute Gendo's orders without question or individuality. Her physical traits include short pale blue hair, red eyes, and a predominantly inexpressive demeanor, marked by a distinctive grey plugsuit.
Arriving with Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley Shikinami at a survivor village near Tokyo-3 in *Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time*, she experiences communal life for the first time, sparking autonomy and curiosity. Assisted by Hikari Suzuhara and villagers, she engages in farming, attends school, and interacts with children, displaying childlike wonder at mundane experiences like new clothes or family dynamics. This environment fosters her nascent sense of self, distinct from her clone lineage. However, her lack of continuous exposure to the life-sustaining LCL fluid leads to gradual physical decomposition.
Her relationship with Shinji evolves as she seeks his guidance in forming an identity. He suggests "Ayanami" as her name, which she adopts to signify her emerging individuality. Despite these developments, her physical deterioration accelerates, culminating in disintegration before Shinji. This event motivates him to confront Gendo and resolve the conflict cycle. During the film's climax, she witnesses the original Rei Ayanami within Evangelion Unit-01 assisting Shinji. In the anti-universe sequence, she participates in Shinji's restructuring of reality—the "Neon Genesis"—which eradicates Evangelions and frees humanity from instrumentalization. In the reset world's conclusion, she appears as an adult alongside Kaworu Nagisa at a train station, symbolizing her integration into a normal existence.
