Description
Yako Katsuragi enters the story as a 16-year-old high school student at her father's funeral, following his mysterious murder misruled a suicide. His death sparks her partnership with the demon Neuro, who offers to solve the mystery if she acts as his human facade. This arrangement positions her as the nominal head of their detective agency, publicly credited with solving cases while Neuro works unseen.

Physically, Yako has short blonde hair adorned with distinctive red hair clips shaped like grinning mouths with sharp teeth. Her standard attire is her school uniform: typically a yellow sweater and green skirt in manga art, or a pink sweater and grey skirt in the anime. Merging with the sentient hair entity Akane significantly elongates her hair, granting temporary access to Akane's abilities.

Her personality blends resilience with profound empathy. Initially ordinary, she adapts to supernatural circumstances while retaining pragmatism. She possesses exceptional emotional intelligence, allowing her to decipher human psychology and motives—a skill Neuro lacks. This proves critical, such as in the HAL arc where she bypasses a password system by intuiting emotional triggers Neuro couldn't grasp. Her kindness contrasts Neuro's cruelty, though prolonged exposure to violence and loss gradually hardens her outlook. Significant relationships include a mentorship with imprisoned singer Aya Asia and a protective bond with police inspector Sasazuka, who sees his deceased sister in her.

Yako exhibits an extraordinary appetite, consuming vast quantities of food with no ill effects—a trait humorously dubbed "The Piggish Detective." This stems from enduring her mother's notoriously poor cooking, which fostered her own culinary skills. Her stomach tolerates even non-standard ingredients like common weeds.

Her character arc centers on transitioning from Neuro's puppet to an independent investigator. Early cases, like exposing Aya Asia's murders, showcase her growing deductive intuition and ability to articulate criminals' emotional motivations. She confronts profound trauma when allies Sasazuka and Fumio Honjou die during conflicts with the terrorist group Sicks, leading to a temporary rift where she expresses regret over the partnership. Reconciliation comes after realizing her value in combating human evil.

In the series finale, set three years later, Yako works as an international negotiator renowned for resolving crises through dialogue. Her most notable achievement involves persuading armed terrorists to surrender peacefully. Neuro reappears, implying their partnership will continue despite his earlier return to the demon world.

Key relationships define her journey: Her dynamic with Neuro blends abuse and mutual dependence, evolving into genuine trust; he eventually acknowledges her indispensability, notably entrusting her to confront the Phantom Thief X alone. Godai serves as a protective older-brother figure. The anime-exclusive arc reveals X as her half-brother—a deviation from the manga.
