Description
Sai Kaitou, alias Phantom Thief X, is a central antagonist defined by a fractured identity and supernatural prowess. A world-renowned thief, he murders victims to compress their bodies into "red boxes," obsessively studying anatomy to trace his origins. His self-destructive quest stems from cellular transformations that erode his memories, leaving his past perpetually elusive.

In the manga, Sai’s origins tie him to Experiment 11—a female clone engineered by the villain Sicks. After his surrogate mother’s post-birth execution, he was unleashed into society as part of Sicks’ experiments. Cellular mutations triggered progressive memory loss, fracturing his sense of self. He allies with Imina, a former government terrorist, who sustains his Phantom Thief persona. Their bond oscillates between master, sibling, and lover, mirroring Sai’s unstable psyche.

The anime reimagines him as the son of scientist Seiichi Katsuragi and witch Seiren, making him Yako Katsuragi’s half-brother. Here, his memories reset every six months. Despite divergent backstories, both versions share core motives: a violent pursuit of identity, targeting individuals with distinctive traits to dissect for clues.

Sai wields cellular shape-shifting to alter his appearance, mimic others, or morph limbs into weapons. Enhanced strength and rapid regeneration grant near-invulnerability, though electrocution or joint injuries briefly incapacitate him. Later, he gains HAL’s Eye—a modified Electronic Drug—enabling mind control via frequencies emitted through gaze.

Prolonged exposure to Sicks’ influence evolves Sai into XI, an emotionless entity loyal to his creator. This form unlocks telepathy, reading neural impulses to flawlessly replicate personalities and combat styles. In the manga, XI kidnaps Yako, manipulating her via HAL’s Eye until Neuro outmaneuvers him. Cornered but unbroken, XI flees, remaining a latent threat. The anime concludes with Sai’s memory reset during a South American temple battle, after which he vanishes.

His fate diverges between mediums: the manga leaves him at large, while the anime strands him as an amnesiac. Both iterations underscore his tragic spiral of violence and self-obliteration, marked by a childlike demeanor and callous indifference to life. Interactions with Neuro reflect twisted mutual intrigue, as Sai fixates on the demon’s potential to unravel his existential enigma.
