Kyousuke Mamo recurs as an antagonist throughout the Lupin III franchise, his background and motivations shifting slightly across appearances while consistently involving time travel and a vendetta against the Lupin lineage.
In the manga and its adaptation in *Lupin the 3rd Part 1* Episode 13, Mamo originates from the year 2854. A science fiction writer driven mad researching the fourth dimension, he constructs a time machine. His quest for revenge begins when Lupin XIII murders his father, a notorious villain, in 2883. Mamo travels through history to eliminate every Lupin family member, targeting ancestors like Jirokichi in 1850, only to be thwarted by Lupin III's deception. The anime adaptation alters his birthdate to November 18, 1932, making him around 40 during *Part 1*. Here, he is a Hugo Prize-winning scientist and writer who predicted Earth's destruction. Institutionalized in 1966, he builds a time machine comparable to "Noah's Ark." His grudge stems from Lupin XIII murdering his family in 2874, leading him to attempt erasing Lupin III by killing Arsène Lupin.
The television special *Elusiveness of the Fog* presents a different motive: Mamo invents his time machine after Lupin XXXIII steals his girlfriend. His plan strands Lupin III, Jigen, Goemon, and Zenigata 500 years in feudal Japan. By ensuring Lupin III dies there, he aims to prevent Lupin XXXIII's existence. Throughout this special, Mamo frequently appears in his time machine capsule to taunt the protagonists and manipulate history, ultimately failing and becoming stranded himself.
He returns in *Is Lupin Still Burning?*, collaborating with Mister X to alter history and erase Lupin III's legacy. Their scheme involves preventing Lupin from forming his team and achieving fame. Intervention by Lupin's allies, despite their lack of recognition, traps Mamo and Mister X in prehistoric times.
Mamo's appearance varies: the manga and *Elusiveness of the Fog* depict him with straw-like, dirty blond hair covering one eye, a pronounced chin resembling Zenigata's, and attire featuring a dark coat with a scarf. Conversely, *Part 1* Episode 13 and *Is Lupin Still Burning?* show him with black hair, a smooth chin, wearing a blue suit with a red cape (later a purple coat). His time machine appears as a glowing capsule in anime adaptations but remains unseen in the manga.
Etymologically, his given name "Kyosuke" combines characters meaning "madness" and "help," while his surname "Mamo" translates to "magic hair."
