Description
Goldva acts as chieftain of the Patch Tribe during the AD 2000 Shaman Fight. An elderly woman with long gray hair and a distinctive crooked nose in the manga, she typically wears traditional Native American chief robes and smokes a ceremonial pipe. Her personality centers on unwavering, unquestioning devotion to the Great Spirit, whose will she consistently follows and attributes events to. Throughout the tournament, she maintains rigorous impartiality, showing no favoritism towards any participant, including the significant Asakura Hao. Her duty shifts to protecting Hao at all costs, even lethally, once he becomes Shaman King.
Her primary spirit ally is Big Chief, the spirit of a former Patch chief who transformed into a Seirei to safeguard the tribe, his mask permanently fused to his soul. Goldva channels Big Chief through her ceremonial pipe, forming the massive O.S. "Big Chief." This Over Soul manifests as immense spiritual armor encasing her body, featuring a thunderbird headdress and an iron ball replacing its right hand. It reaches sizes comparable to the Five Grand Elemental Spirits and possesses immense physical strength, demonstrated by smashing a Golem during an invasion of the Great Spirit's sanctuary.
Born October 1, 1921, Goldva oversees critical Shaman Fight aspects. She dispatches the Ten Patch Officiants globally to test and qualify shamans. When Officiant Chrom is killed by Tao Ren, she acknowledges the Great Spirit's limitations in foreseeing all outcomes while highlighting Yoh Asakura's potential. She later intervenes in Officiant assignments, directing Silva to oversee Ren despite his objections, reinforcing officiant neutrality. After preliminary matches, she announces the next phase at Mimata Hall, warning participants they cannot return to normal lives.
Monitoring events via the Oracle Monitor, Goldva observes Yoh's early battles and conflicts involving Hao's followers at Mesa Verdede. She expresses irritation when Hao leaks information about the path to Patch Village but remains curious about its consequences. Upon the remaining teams' arrival on the tournament island, she formally commences the matches. She later observes Jeanne's capabilities and discusses Hao's Spirit of Fire with Kalim, restating the Patch Tribe's non-interference role.
When Yoh and other teams withdraw before the final round, Goldva declares Hao the Shaman King. She escorts Hao to the King's Sanctuary alongside Lip and Rap. After Hao thwarts an assassination attempt by Redseb and Seyrarm, Goldva uses O.S. "Big Chief" to destroy their Golem. The Golem regenerates until Hao consumes Seyrarm's soul. Later, during a Plants invasion, Goldva confronts the attackers, revealing Lip and Rap were killed and absorbed by Hao. Advancing with Big Chief, both are destroyed and their souls consumed by Hao.
In the sequel *Shaman King: Flowers*, Goldva appears alongside Hao to prevent Thallim from interfering in a battle involving Kamogawa Yohsuke and Sakurai Sakutaro. She asserts Hao's decisions as Shaman King are absolute, particularly regarding Sakutaro's role as guardian spirit for Yoh's son, Hana Asakura. Her name derives from the chemical element gold, following the Patch Tribe's naming convention.
