Description
Shūichi Kuze, a German violin virtuoso residing in Otowa, Australia, is approximately 30 years old during the main events, with flashbacks showing him at 18. Standing 177 cm tall and weighing 61 kg, his birthday is February 15. He lives alone, neighboring Sumire Asou, whom he openly admires despite her marriage. His friendship with Yuu Himura originates from their time at Otobane Academy alongside Nagi Hirono and Yuuko Amamiya. Hiro Hirono avidly collects Kuze's violin CDs.

Kuze possesses a history as a womanizer, with Nagi Hirono among his past romantic interests. Diagnosed with terminal degenerative cardiomyopathy six months prior to Mizuki Hayama's arrival, his prognosis gives him less than a year. The illness progressively atrophies his heart muscle, leading to eventual wheelchair dependency and complete bed rest. Managing daily symptoms with medication, he accepts the incurable nature of his condition. This drives him to emotional and social isolation, severing ties and giving away possessions as he awaits death.

Mizuki Hayama visits Otowa during winter break, introduced by Sumire. She frequently visits Kuze's home, her youthful energy charming him as a pleasant distraction, though he reacts with bemusement to her attentions. Kuze harbors a fetish for school uniforms, intensifying his internal conflict when Mizuki confesses her love, as he perceives her as a minor and refuses to act on such impulses. He harshly rebuffs her, demanding she stay away. Learning of his illness, Mizuki resolves to support him, persistently reaching out despite his repeated, angry rejections fueled by his desire to spare her future pain.

Kuze's past reveals deeper connections. While at Otobane Academy, he investigated Yuuko Amamiya at Yuu's request, uncovering her unsettling influence on classmates and witnessing her protect a bag containing a brick during a physical altercation. At a farewell party before leaving Japan, he performed a violin piece for Yuu, Yuuko, and Nagi; all three departed prematurely—Yuuko overwhelmed, Yuu chasing after her, and Nagi absent. Years later, playing violin publicly, he encountered a young Mizuki captivated by his music. He affectionately called her "cute little lady" and tied his hair ribbon on her head, a gesture she cherished.

Mizuki's unwavering efforts gradually breach Kuze's emotional barriers. In a pivotal rooftop confrontation, she declares her commitment to cherish their time despite his impending death, arguing life's transient nature makes their bond worth treasuring. This perspective, combined with her resilience, draws Kuze from his depression. He undergoes a risky surgery that extends his life by a few years. Achieving peace, he commits to a relationship with Mizuki, though they agree to delay its physical consummation until she reaches legal adulthood, symbolizing newfound hope and acceptance of their limited future.
