Centuries-old demon Mōryō arrives from another world as the primary antagonist of the Naruto Shippūden movie. He once sought to establish a "Thousand-Year Kingdom," wielding an army of nearly indestructible stone soldiers, the Ghost Army, created by allied shinobi using his power. His conquest met its defeat when the Land of Demons' high priestess, Miroku, sealed his soul within a shrine and his body in the Land of Swamps, preventing his full resurrection. Mōryō manifests as a colossal serpentine entity with a dark purple body, multiple draconic heads, eyes that glow red, and blue tongues. A lighter purple aura envelops his form, drawing inspiration from mythological creatures like the Hydra. He embodies pure malice and ambition, devoid of loyalty or compassion. Viewing others as expendable tools, he demonstrated this by possessing his devotee Yomi—who willingly offered his body after freeing Mōryō's soul—only to discard the vessel without hesitation once reunited with his original body, causing Yomi's death. His sole drive is to plunge the world into darkness to achieve eternal dominion. His powers center on darkness manipulation and command of the Ghost Army. He generates oppressive shadows that hinder vision and movement. Reuniting soul and body amplifies his strength, allowing effortless control of the stone soldiers. While possessing a host, he grants enhanced physical capabilities and ninjutsu, though the human body degrades and dies under his energy. He also possesses regenerative properties and can absorb others to augment his strength, attempting this with the priestess Shion. During the film, Yomi and subordinates shatter the seal on Mōryō's soul. Lacking a body, Mōryō inhabits Yomi's form, dispatching the Ghost Army and assassins to retrieve his original body and eliminate Shion, the sole person capable of resealing him. After reuniting soul and body in the Land of Swamps, Mōryō battles Naruto Uzumaki and Shion. He nearly absorbs Shion but is destroyed by a collaborative Rasengan technique fueled by both Naruto's and Shion's chakra. Afterward, Shion reveals Mōryō emerged from humanity's collective darkness, implying his essence could resurface if evil endures. This necessitates the continuation of her priestess lineage to counter future threats. Mōryō's name translates to "all kinds of spirits and goblins," reflecting his supernatural origins. He represents the franchise's first purely metaphysical antagonist, diverging from human-centric villains. His design and role as an immortal force of corruption draw from Japanese folklore concepts of malevolent entities born from negative human emotions. The character appears exclusively in this film and its related media.
