Prahasta, a formidable rakshasa warrior in the Hindu epic Ramayana, holds prominence as the chief commander of Ravana’s army in Lanka. Born to Sumali and Ketumati, he is brother to four sisters, including Kaikashi, Ravana’s mother. His lineage extends to his warrior son, Jambumali, who engages in pivotal battles within the Ramayana’s events. As Ravana’s principal military strategist, Prahasta spearheaded campaigns against deities and beings across the three worlds—challenging Yama, Kubera, Devas, Asuras, and Daityas—to secure Ravana’s supremacy. During Rama’s siege of Lanka, he led Ravana’s forces with lethal efficiency, decimating scores of Sugriva’s vanara warriors. Conflicting accounts mark his demise: some traditions credit Lakshmana with his defeat, while others attribute his fatal injury to the vanara Nila, who crushed his neck with a hurled stone. Certain narratives link Prahasta’s rebirth to Purochana in the Mahabharata, where he serves Duryodhana and engineers the Lakshagraha fire-trap conspiracy. His legacy as a linchpin of Ravana’s rule stems from his martial prowess and unwavering loyalty, evident in his defense of Lanka’s sovereignty, though he remains uninvolved in Sita’s abduction, adhering strictly to his role as protector of the kingdom.
