Description
Byakko no Gai is one of the Six Saint Beasts appointed by Zeus to uphold cosmic order. As the White Tiger of the West embodying autumn, he wields the Armor of Byakko, a gift from Zeus granting authority over natural laws and a strong affinity for felines. Gai appears as a 19-year-old with long blonde hair featuring black tips, typically dressed in a white long-sleeved qipao, black pants, and traditional flat shoes.
Despite his adult angelic form, Gai retains a persistently childlike mindset marked by playful energy and mischievous tendencies. He frequently attempts pranks, especially targeting Suzaku no Rey, though these consistently fail and often injure him instead. Gai also pursues inventive projects, though his inventions typically prove useless. This playful nature coexists with sudden seriousness when situations demand focus, revealing underlying maturity. Emotional spikes, whether excitement or anger, cause his fangs to become visible.
Significant relationships shape Gai. He shares a deep, protective bond with Seiryuu no Goh, whom he respects as an older brother figure; their connection dates back to their early years as young angels. His friendship with Fuuga no Maya, a half-human angel, centers on shared childlike interests like playing games and watching anime, particularly "Venom Saint," featuring chibi-fied versions of their adventures. Gai’s dynamic with Rey involves persistent but unsuccessful prank attempts, yet they maintain an underlying mutual respect as fellow Saint Beasts. During his time on Earth, Gai developed an attachment to human concepts like convenience stores, wishing heaven had similar amenities.
Gai’s backstory includes pivotal involvement in heavenly conflicts. He participated in the Saint Beast selection trials overseen by Zeus, who instituted a divisive angelic ranking system. This system sparked unrest, fostering jealousy and resentment among angels—dynamics Gai witnessed. Initially aligned with Zeus, Gai later joined Gou, Shin, and Rey in a coup against Zeus orchestrated by Judas and Luca, driven by shared disillusionment with divine tyranny. This rebellion ended tragically when Zeus manipulated Gai and three other Saint Beasts into betraying Judas and Luca during the confrontation. Under Zeus's influence, Gai fought against his former allies, contributing to Judas and Luca's banishment to hell, marking a low point in his loyalty and judgment.
Following the failed rebellion, Gai descended to Earth alongside Gou, Shin, and Rey as part of the Four Saint Beasts. Their mission focused on investigating the disappearances of guardian angels, a crisis linked to the escaped fallen angels Judas and Luca. During this investigation, Gai’s ability to channel natural forces proved instrumental in combating supernatural threats. His time on Earth exposed him to human culture, deepening his appreciation for its novelties and conveniences. Despite prior conflicts, Gai’s core commitment to protecting heaven and earth remained evident through his actions alongside the reformed Saint Beasts unit.
Throughout conflicts and missions, Gai evolved from a lighthearted prankster into a dedicated guardian. His experiences on Earth tempered his impulsiveness without erasing his innate playfulness, allowing him to balance duties with his inherent spiritedness. This development highlights his progression, maintaining hope and compassion despite witnessing heaven’s corruption and participating in its darkest conflicts.
