Description
Ido-Sennin, a yōkai dwelling within a well in GeGeGe Forest, maintains an alliance with Kitarō and the Kitarō Family. Originating as a human in China millennia ago, he journeyed to Japan and took residence in a well. Prolonged inhalation of methane gas within this well transformed him into an immortal yōkai. This metamorphosis fostered a profound sense of indebtedness to Japan, compelling him to protect the land when it faces threats.
His physical form features a large, deformed head with deeply sunken eye sockets—the left socket typically larger than the right—housing small, beady eyes. Mold-spotted skin, stringy hair, the absence of a nose, and thin, wrinkly lips concealing sharp teeth define his face. He typically wears a robe and carries a walking stick.
Snarky and direct in personality, Ido-Sennin possesses extensive knowledge of Eurasian yōkai lore, magic, and mystical medicine. He frequently provides vital assistance in resolving supernatural incidents. His mystical tool, the All Purpose Glass Ball, reveals the identities of unknown culprits. His blunt demeanor occasionally sparks conflicts, particularly with Medama-Oyaji, notably observed in the 2007 anime adaptation.
His role evolves across anime adaptations:
- The 1971 series features him infrequently, with limited appearances such as in "Yōkai Cloth."
- Starting with the 1985 series, he emerges as a recurring ally, aiding Kitarō in multiple incidents, including the film *GeGeGe no Kitarō: Saikyō Yōkai Gundan! Nippon Jōriku!!*.
- His supportive role continues in the 1996 and 2007 anime series, where he operates from Yōkai Yokochō, utilizing his expertise in mystical substances and medicines.
