Description
Yashi-Otoshi is a plant-based yōkai known for his antagonistic role. He operates as part of the Yōkai Army alongside Akamata and Chinpo, a collaboration originating in his debut Shonen Magazine story.
His primary ability involves generating and launching coconuts from the small tree on his head; these projectiles regenerate instantly. When planted, the coconuts rapidly grow into full-sized trees, a power highlighted in the 2007 anime. He manipulates surrounding vegetation to ensnare or attack foes, depicted in the original manga and 1985 film. He also generates potent winds by manipulating his trees, shown in the 1985 anime and referenced in 2007 series magazine materials.
Earlier adaptations, including the manga and 1968 anime, grant him transformation capabilities, shifting between a flora-based form and a humanoid yōkai appearance. His resilience varies: the 1996 anime film shows full regeneration after incineration, contrasting with fatal vulnerabilities in prior versions. The 2007 anime emphasizes his exceptional durability as a member of the South Asian Yōkai Five, alongside Akamata, Asanbosam, Chinpo, and Langsuyar. Under Gahi's hypnosis during this storyline, he and the group temporarily resist Kitarō's Internal Electricity. Post-hypnosis, they gain permanent immunity to Gahi's mind control.
He appears in multiple official adaptations: episode 39 of the 1968 anime ("Yōkai Army"), the 1985 film, the 1996 film *GeGeGe no Kitarō: Dai-Kaijū*, and episodes 71 ("Southern Yōkai Landing on Japan!!") and 76 ("Strongest Tag Battle!! Southern & Chinese Yōkai!!") of the 2007 anime.
