Description
Koumyou Sanzo served as the previous guardian of the Seiten and Maten sutras before passing this responsibility to his successor and adopted son, Genjo Sanzo. He discovered an infant boy floating down a river, named him Kouryuu, and raised him at Kinzan Temple.

Koumyou presented a paradoxical personality, often seeming absent-minded or foolish—interrupting conversations with irrelevant remarks or forgetting social conventions—while simultaneously revealing sharp philosophical insights. He adhered to the Buddhist principle of "Muichimotsu" (holding nothing), striving to live without attachments, though he acknowledged failing this ideal due to his deep affection for Kouryuu. As a mentor, he rejected conventional teaching methods, believing wisdom should be self-discovered. He exhibited worldly habits like smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation, maintained long blond hair instead of shaving his head, and openly criticized monks who isolated themselves from society, viewing such seclusion as weakness.

Physically, Koumyou wore the traditional Sanzo priest uniform: a white robe over a black sleeveless shirt, black arm coverings, and a gold chest guard. He bore a red chakra mark on his forehead, signifying his status. His gentle, smiling face featured brown eyes, though he typically kept them nearly shut.

Originally named Houmei, he trained as a Sanzo candidate but gained a reputation as the "Demerit Monk" for frequent punishments due to laziness and rule-breaking. During this period, he befriended fellow trainees Toudai (later Goudai Sanzo) and the demon Genkai (later Tenkai Sanzo), displaying no prejudice against demons. Despite his perceived shortcomings, he demonstrated exceptional spiritual ability, channeling chi without mantras—a feat requiring immense focus.

At age 39, Koumyou visited Zenou Temple at Goudai Sanzo's request to observe successor candidates. There, he met Ken'yuu, a 17-year-old prodigy excluded from succession despite his skills. Koumyou discerned Ken'yuu's nihilistic worldview, which framed all challenges as life-or-death struggles. After Ken'yuu killed Goudai during the succession test, Koumyou took responsibility for him, granting him the name Ukoku Sanzo. They traveled together for a year before Koumyou returned to Kinzan Temple.

Back at Kinzan, Koumyou focused on raising Kouryuu and preparing him to inherit the sutras. During Ukoku's periodic visits, the two made an enigmatic agreement termed "The Bet," centered on Ukoku's "Eat or Be Eaten" philosophy, with stakes involving "the next rising sun." When Kouryuu turned 13, Koumyou conferred the Sanzo title and the Maten Sutra upon him. Immediately afterward, during a youkai attack on the temple, Koumyou immobilized Genjo with a binding spell to protect him and allowed himself to be killed. He died at age 47.

Koumyou wielded significant spiritual power, uniquely capable of channeling chi without mantras. His abilities included binding spells, as demonstrated during his final act to protect Genjo. His relationships defined key narrative arcs: as Goudai Sanzo's childhood friend, Tenkai Sanzo's protector during their training days, Ukoku Sanzo's reluctant mentor after Goudai's murder, and Genjo Sanzo's foundational parental figure.
