Ash's Gligar originated from a flock blown into an urban area by strong winds. Unable to navigate the tall buildings with sonar, it resorted to stealing food alongside other Gligar. This Gligar stood out due to its clumsiness, poor flight skills, and acrophobia, frequently crash-landing into Ash during their early meetings. When Team Rocket scattered the flock and Paul captured the Gliscor leader, this Gligar chose to remain with Ash, leading to its capture.
As a Gligar, it possessed a cheerful but emotionally sensitive nature, exhibiting childlike enthusiasm for apples and deep affection for Ash. However, it lacked confidence in battle, especially after losing to Paul's Gliscor, intensifying its fear of direct fights and heights. A critical encounter with Team Rocket saw it perfect X-Scissor to free Ash; later, when Ash fell from a canyon, it used a Razor Fang gifted by Gary to evolve into Gliscor mid-air. This evolution cured its acrophobia and significantly enhanced its abilities, though core traits like clinginess and landing on Ash persisted.
Post-evolution, Gliscor gained greater battle confidence and competitiveness, participating in gym battles and major tournaments. It spontaneously learned Fire Fang after being struck by an Ice-type move, using it to strategically defeat Byron's Bastiodon. Despite losses to opponents like Candice's Snover and Paul's Torterra, it played a critical role in the Sinnoh League by defeating Paul's Drapion. Recognizing its need to hone aerial combat, Ash entrusted Gliscor to Air Battle Master McCann for specialized training. There, it mastered Giga Impact and learned Stone Edge, later returning briefly to assist in Ash's Sinnoh League matches.
Gliscor balanced its evolved strength with enduring quirks: it remained emotionally expressive, crying when scolded or frightened, and displayed unique mannerisms like exaggerated winking, lip-licking, and tongue protrusion. It maintained deep loyalty to Ash, often seeking approval through battle success or physical affection, such as hugging Ash after accomplishments. After the Sinnoh League, it resided at Professor Oak's laboratory, occasionally assisting in training other Pokémon like Sirfetch'd.
Throughout its journey, Gliscor's move set evolved from basic techniques like Sand Attack and Steel Wing to advanced attacks. Key learned moves included X-Scissor (perfected before evolution), Fire Fang (post-evolution), Giga Impact, and Stone Edge (during McCann's training). It also utilized Guillotine, Screech, and Giga Impact in battles, reflecting its growth from a timid Gligar into a resilient fighter.
