Description
Professor Rowan, Sinnoh's primary Pokémon professor, operates from his Sandgem Town laboratory. His research delves deeply into Pokémon evolution and Sinnoh's mythological legends, specifically investigating links between evolution and legendary Pokémon that do not evolve. He maintains professional ties with colleagues like Professor Oak and Professor Sycamore, whom he mentored in evolution studies during Sycamore's youth.

Physically, he appears around 60 years old with fair skin, blue eyes, and distinctive spiky white hair complemented by sideburns and a mustache. His standard attire includes a gray jacket over a white shirt, a light blue vest, a gray tie, dark teal pants, and gray shoes. He dons a white lab coat during research.

Personality-wise, he presents a stern, serious, and no-nonsense demeanor, often contrasting with cheerier regional professors. Beneath this exterior lies patience and fairness. He takes obligations seriously, mentoring trainers and colleagues with a strict yet principled approach, including light critiques of Professor Oak's relaxed methods.

His interaction with new trainers begins when aspiring coordinator Dawn accidentally encounters him while searching for his lab. After assisting her, he provides a starter Pokémon—Piplup, Turtwig, or Chimchar—along with Poké Balls and a Pokédex. This Piplup becomes Dawn's primary partner. He similarly provides starters to other Sinnoh beginners.

During the Pokémon Summer Academy, he oversees training activities, emphasizing discipline and structured learning. He enforces rules strictly, like penalizing teams for leaving designated areas during water-type studies. He also leads an investigation into ghost-type phenomena, connecting reports of a Dusknoir to local folklore about a spirit gate and intervening to protect participants.

His role expands during Team Galactic's activities targeting Sinnoh's legendary Pokémon. He monitors anomalous energy beams directed at Mt. Coronet and communicates with Cynthia and Gary Oak about disturbances at lakes Acuity, Verity, and Valor. He collaborates to analyze Team Galactic's actions and their implications for Sinnoh's space-time legends, later discussing the events' impact on regional research after the group's defeat.

He reappears post-Grand Festival to congratulate Dawn on her achievements, advising her on selecting Pokémon for her continued journey but declining to choose for her, emphasizing trainers understand their own Pokémon best. During this visit, he assists a new, indecisive trainer named Shinko with selecting a starter, ultimately relying on Dawn's help to retrieve the escaped starters during a conflict.

Pokémon under his direct care or used in research include Starly and Staraptor for lab studies. He manages starter Pokémon lineages, distributing Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup to new trainers. His laboratory functions as a hub for fieldwork data collection and regional Pokédex upgrades, including expanding it to National Mode for trainers documenting all Sinnoh species.
