OVA
Description
Matake Ogata attends Misaki City Municipal High School as a classmate of Yuji Sakai. She possesses short red hair, green eyes, and a height of 170 cm. Her personality is cheerful, straightforward, and energetic, consistently livening up those around her and earning her many friends across genders. A self-described tomboy, Matake tends to be nosy, loud, and strong-willed. She dislikes dishonesty and reacts sharply to deception.
An active member of the school volleyball team, she excels as a regular player despite being a first-year. Her background includes frequent visits to the Satō Residence, where she assists with household chores alongside acquaintances Keisaku Satō and Eita Tanaka, a connection established before the series' events.
Matake harbors romantic feelings for Eita Tanaka. This reveals a more vulnerable and traditionally feminine side, making her visibly nervous when teased about him. She confesses her feelings to Tanaka during the Misago Festival, but he avoids addressing it. Following this rejection, she becomes more assertive in pressing the issue, creating ongoing tension in their relationship. Her concern for Tanaka's well-being is evident, particularly after Margery Daw's actions nearly cost Matake her life, leading Tanaka to become overprotective.
In the OVA "Shakugan no Shana SP: Koi to Onsen no Kōgai Gakushū!", Matake's attempts to confess her feelings to Tanaka during a school trip to temples and a hot springs resort form a central plot. An early dream of Tanaka confessing on a moonlit beach heightens her determination. During the trip, she misinterprets Tanaka and Keisaku racing up the "Stairs of Marriage" (a location rumored to unite couples) as romantic interest between them, sparking temporary jealousy.
Her confession efforts face repeated comedic mishaps: she intervenes to stop male classmates peeping into the women's hot springs (anticipating and foiling them); a pillow fight game sees Tanaka shielding Keisaku from her throw; and a nighttime attempt to wake Tanaka results in chaotic physical comedy and accidentally injuring classmate Hayato Ike. Later, a mysterious blonde woman in the hot springs advises her to act immediately. Taking this advice, Matake makes a final attempt at the pier the next morning, but Tanaka misunderstands her intentions, assuming she wishes to apologize about Ike. Frustrated, she throws rocks at his head.
Matake maintains a close friendship with classmate Kazumi Yoshida, often encouraging her to be more confident, particularly regarding her physique. Her name, containing the character for "bamboo" (竹), reflects her straightforward nature.
