Description
Sting Oakley serves in the Earth Alliance's elite Phantom Pain unit as one of three Extended pilots. Genetic and cybernetic enhancements grant him combat prowess but cause severe physical and psychological side effects, requiring constant medical oversight and shortening his lifespan. Within his unit, he displays relative stability, assuming a leadership role characterized by a calm, caring demeanor, particularly protective of Stella Loussier like an older brother. Combat, however, triggers an aggressive and competitive shift in his personality. A psychological safeguard, the block word "Dream," can deactivate him.
His combat record begins infiltrating the PLANT colony Armory One to steal the ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam. He participates in subsequent space battles, including clashes within a debris field and the ruins of Junius Seven. Deployed to Earth after the Second Alliance-PLANT War erupts, he engages ZAFT forces in multiple skirmishes, developing a rivalry with Athrun Zala during encounters against the Saviour Gundam. His Chaos Gundam is damaged by Kira Yamato’s Freedom Gundam at the Battle of Crete but is rapidly repaired. He later supports Stella’s GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam during the assault on Berlin, where the Chaos Gundam is bisected by an MVF-M11C Murasame; Sting survives the unit's destruction.
Recovered, he is reassigned to the Earth Alliance stronghold Heaven's Base in Iceland. Piloting a new GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam during Operation Ragnarök, the unit's overwhelming power intensifies his aggression, eroding his mental stability until he suffers a complete psychological breakdown. Defending Heaven's Base, he battles Shinn Asuka in the Destiny Gundam, Lunamaria Hawke in the Impulse Gundam, and Rey Za Burrel in the Legend Gundam. Shinn Asuka kills him by impaling the Destroy Gundam’s cockpit with the Arondight anti-ship sword. Even in death, he remains fixated on the Destroy Gundam; the novelization depicts him encountering spectral representations of Auel and Stella, compelling him towards them despite his memory loss.
His relationships underscore his fragmented psyche. He feels deeply protective of Stella, frequently chastising Auel Neider for provoking her. Artificial memory wipes following the deaths of Stella and Auel cause him to treat Stella as a stranger and resent her assignment to the Destroy Gundam. His interactions with Auel involve camaraderie through games like cards and basketball, though he readily reprimands Auel for recklessness. These memory erasures significantly contribute to his growing isolation and mental deterioration.
