Description
Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, originally the Sage of Six Paths, was the elder twin son of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and the human emperor Tenji. Born with immense chakra inherited from his mother, he lived during an era of conflict in the Land of Ancestors. Discovering Kaguya's sacrificial rituals involving the God Tree, which claimed villagers including his love interest Haori, awakened his Sharingan. A forced confrontation with his brainwashed brother Hamura later triggered his Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan.
Learning Kaguya merged with the God Tree to form the Ten-Tails to reclaim her dispersed chakra, Hagoromo and Hamura confronted her. Their months-long battle culminated with Hagoromo sealing the Ten-Tails within himself using Six Paths Chibaku Tensei, imprisoning Kaguya within the moon's core. This act made him the first jinchūriki and earned him the title "Saviour of This World." Hamura then relocated to the moon to guard Kaguya's seal, while Hagoromo remained on Earth to spread chakra and his peaceful philosophy, Ninshū, emphasizing spiritual connection over conflict.
Later, Hagoromo divided the Ten-Tails' chakra using the Creation of All Things technique, creating the nine tailed beasts. He named each beast and, in the anime, established worldwide temples for their protection. This act left him weakened for months, sustained only by the Ten-Tails' residual life force. He eventually sealed the Ten-Tails' husk within the moon.
Hagoromo fathered two sons: Indra, a prodigy inheriting ocular powers who advocated individual strength, and Asura, initially untalented, who believed in cooperation and growth through bonds. Influenced by Asura's ideals, Hagoromo designated him as successor, sparking Indra's resentment—a rift exploited by Kaguya's manifested will, Black Zetsu. This conflict initiated a cycle of reincarnation between the brothers' chakra across generations. Anticipating future strife, Hagoromo inscribed a stone tablet with his history, later altered by Black Zetsu to manipulate descendants like Madara Uchiha into reviving Kaguya.
Despite physical death, Hagoromo's chakra and consciousness endured. Centuries later, during the Fourth Shinobi World War, he appeared before Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha—reincarnations of Asura and Indra—imparting his Yin-Yang powers and Six Paths chakra to aid their defeat of Madara and Kaguya. He later summoned deceased Kage to transport Team 7 and the tailed beasts back from Kaguya's dimension, concluding his role in restoring peace.
Personality-wise, Hagoromo remained calm, patient, and committed to peace through understanding. He acknowledged past failures, particularly in handling his sons' conflict, and adapted by entrusting both Naruto and Sasuke with his legacy. His appearance featured Rinnegan eyes, forehead horns, and magatama-patterned robes, with Yin and Yang symbols on his palms.
Hagoromo's story includes an illness contracted as a jinchūriki, cured by "polar particles" from a meteor in the Land of Redaku. He hid the remaining particles, though their fate remains undisclosed. A prophecy from the toad sage Gamamaru foretold a "blue-eyed child" uniting the tailed beasts, fulfilled by Naruto.
