Taira no Chitose holds the honored position of the Priestess of the Black Dragon (Kokuryū no Miko), formally acknowledged by the retired emperor in the capital of Kyo. A member of the lesser noble Taira clan, she is the younger sister of Taira no Katsuzane, the Seiryū of Earth among the Eight Guardians. Chitose's delicate, ephemeral appearance masks a strong-willed and obstinate character, deeply committed to her views on her sacred duties and the realm's political turmoil. Her status as the officially recognized priestess places her in direct conflict upon the arrival of Karin Takakura, the true Priestess of the White Dragon. Chitose acts as an agent for the retired emperor's faction, opposing Karin's eventual alignment with forces seeking reconciliation between emperor and retired emperor. This rivalry forms a core tension, with Chitose's legitimacy publicly accepted while the Eight Guardians initially doubt Karin's. Chitose often relies on intermediaries like Shirin, a shirabyoshi dancer favored by the retired emperor. Shirin carries out actions on Chitose's behalf, though she denies it, casting ambiguity over Chitose's direct involvement in incidents targeting Karin. Witnessing Karin's burgeoning powers, particularly her instinctive defeat of a vengeful spirit, triggers deep insecurity in Chitose about her own abilities. Manipulated by Akram, who exploits her devotion and ambition, Chitose uses her priestess powers to awaken powerful vengeful spirits – Inugami, Nezumi, Itachi, Tengu, Chou, Baku, Kawahori – unleashing them to destabilize the capital and target the emperor's faction. Her actions escalate Kyo's spiritual corruption. During these attacks, she recognizes the suffering inflicted yet feels powerless to counter the threats without Akram's guidance, revealing her internal conflict and dependence on him. Tension marks her relationship with her brother, Katsuzane, due to his role as one of Karin's protectors. Katsuzane openly scorns nobles seeking advancement solely through Chitose's status, highlighting the complex dynamic between the siblings despite their shared clan allegiance.
