Description
Ged, the archmage of Earthsea also known as Sparrowhawk, stands among the world's most potent wizards and wields the authority of a dragon lord to speak with dragons. He rescues Prince Arren from a desert wolf attack, becoming his traveling companion to Hort Town. There, Ged confronts the slaver Hare, freeing the captured Arren after his sword is taken. He then guides Arren to the farm of his old friend Tenar, who shelters a young girl scarred by burns, Therru.
Ged's quest drives him to investigate the world's unraveling balance, evident in spreading sickness, failing magic, and unnatural events such as dragons battling in the sky. He identifies the warlock Cob, ruler of Hort Town, as the source. Cob seeks eternal life by tearing open a door between the living and the dead, draining the world's vital force. Confronting Cob in his castle, Ged discovers the root of the chaos. During this encounter, Cob exploits Arren's fractured psyche and shadow-haunted mind, compelling him to assault Ged. Though Ged breaks Cob's hold on the prince, he himself falls captive to Cob's subordinate, Hare.
Practical and compassionate, Ged engages in daily farm labor—plowing, drawing water, tending animals—maintaining calm amidst the growing crisis. His wisdom guides Arren toward self-acceptance and reconciliation with his inner darkness. At the climax, Ged and Tenar face execution at dawn, only to be saved by Arren and Therru. Empowered by Ged's mentorship, Arren defeats Cob by severing his hand, shattering his magical grip. Cob ages rapidly and attacks Therru, who reveals herself as the dragon Tehanu, destroys Cob, and rescues Arren. With balance restored, Ged departs with Arren for Enlad to renew order, leaving Tenar and Therru at the farm. Dragons soaring overhead signal the world's healing.
Ged's history includes a prior conflict where he defeated and banished Cob to the Wastelands for attempting to control the dead, cementing their rivalry. He occasionally transforms into a hawk, reflecting his use-name Sparrowhawk. Positioned as a stabilizing force in Earthsea, Ged commits to mentoring the next generation and mending the world's fractures.
