Bunta Sugawara
Description
Bunta Sugawara was a distinguished Japanese actor who, later in his career, became recognized for his voice work in several prominent animated films. Born on August 16, 1933, in Sendai, Japan, he initially studied law at Waseda University before leaving to pursue acting. He began his on-screen career in the mid-1950s and became a major star, particularly known for his lead roles in yakuza films such as the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series and the Truck Yarō comedy films.
Sugawara's career as a voice actor began relatively late, with his first role in animation coming in 2001. That year, he was cast by Studio Ghibli to voice the character Kamaji, the multi-limbed boiler room operator, in the Academy Award-winning film Spirited Away. This performance led to further collaborations with the renowned studio.
His second major anime role was in another Ghibli production, Tales from Earthsea, directed by Gorō Miyazaki and released in 2006. In this film, he provided the voice for the powerful archmage Ged, also known as Sparrowhawk, a role that utilized his distinctive, gravelly voice to convey wisdom and experience. He continued his association with director Mamoru Hosoda, who had worked on early Ghibli films, by voicing the character Nirasaki, an elderly farmer, in the 2012 film Wolf Children.
Beyond these prominent films, his other anime voice roles included the titular monk in the series Ryōkan-san and the narrator for the Japanese version of the video game Dissidia: Final Fantasy. He also voiced the character Aku in the Japanese dub of the animated series Samurai Jack.
Throughout his long career in film and television, Sugawara received numerous accolades for his live-action performances, including the Japan Film Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1980. In recognition of his lifetime of contributions to the film industry, he was posthumously awarded the Special Award from the Chairman at the 38th Japan Academy Film Prize ceremony in 2015. Bunta Sugawara passed away on November 28, 2014.
