Description
Colonel Commander Herbert von Kuspen led the elite Kuspen Combat Battalion for the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War's final phase. His battalion was attached to the 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit aboard the Jotunheim near the war's end, specifically during the Battle of A Baoa Qu. Upon arrival at A Baoa Qu, he immediately moved to assume command of the Jotunheim but faced resistance from Lieutenant Commander Monique Cadillac and Captain Martin Prochnow, highlighting his authoritative nature and internal command tensions within Zeon's crumbling forces.
He expressed strong disdain for the inadequacy of resources provided to his forces, showing particular disgust when promised "Elite Force" reinforcements arrived as inexperienced recruits piloting obsolete MP-02A Oggo mobile pods. During an engagement against Federation Salamis-class ships, he restricted Oggo deployments to conserve resources, prioritizing strategic preservation over immediate tactical support despite facing numerically superior opponents.
Tasked with defending the E field sector during the Federation's massive assault on A Baoa Qu, Herbert piloted a custom MS-14A Gelgoog. This unit featured an all-silver paint scheme, enhanced communication systems for command coordination, and was armed with a beam naginata, beam rifle, and shield.
When A Baoa Qu's command structure collapsed and an emergency cease-fire order was issued, Herbert vehemently rejected the surrender directive. He drew his sidearm against Prochnow to enforce his refusal to retreat and prepared his Gelgoog for combat. Monique Cadillac intervened at gunpoint, accusing him of abandoning his subordinates. Herbert retorted that he had tired of her challenges to his authority, underscoring his rigid adherence to Zeon's cause.
In the ensuing combat against a Federation vanguard flotilla that ignored the cease-fire, Herbert fought alongside Monique Cadillac's Zudah and Oliver May's Big Rang. He destroyed two RB-79 Ball units and ordered the remaining Oggo pilots to cover the retreat of Zeon forces from the E field. During this action, he sacrificed himself to protect one Oggo mobile pod piloted by a young recruit, enabling the successful evacuation of surviving troops but resulting in his death.
