Description
Oliver May serves as an engineering officer within the Principality of Zeon's 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit during the One Year War. Stationed aboard the Jotunheim, his primary responsibility involves collecting combat data and evaluating experimental mobile weapons for Zeon. Initially enthusiastic about weapon development, May demonstrates dedication as a mobile weapon evaluator and expresses genuine excitement over data potentially advancing Zeon's capabilities. He exhibits emotional sensitivity, particularly feeling sadness when test machines are discarded despite their potential.
His assignments commence with testing the QCX-76A Jormungand plasma gun during the Battle of Loum. When the weapon fails to receive targeting data, he pilots an observation shuttle toward the front lines, encountering Char Aznable who advises retreat. This experience concludes with May documenting the weapon's limited deployment with resignation. Subsequent evaluations include the YMT-05 Hildolfr mobile tank on Earth, where he learns the test serves as cover for desperate deployment. He witnesses the sacrifice of its pilot, Maj. Demeziere Sonnen, who dies protecting May and Captain Monique Cadillac.
During EMS-10 Zudah mobile suit testing, May initially believes in its potential to shift the war's tide. He later discovers its fatal design flaws and political interference from the Zeonic Company, confronting test pilot Jean-Luc Duvall about these issues. Despite the Zudah's combat successes against RGM-79 GMs, the suit is not adopted for mass production, deepening May's disillusionment with Zeon's leadership.
In the war's final months, May coordinates retrieval of data from the MSM-07Di Ze'Gok after its original test unit is destroyed. He pilots a Zudah to protect the Jotunheim during this operation, witnessing test pilot Werner Holbein's death after a successful attack on Federation ships. May strongly protests the MP-02A Oggo mobile pod tests, recognizing Zeon's intent to deploy it regardless of results. He witnesses the death of Erwin Cadillac (Monique's brother) during Oggo combat operations.
At the Battle of A Baoa Qu, May pilots the MA-05Ad Big Rang mobile armor during an emergency. Despite considering the machine impractical, he uses it effectively to destroy enemy units and resupply Oggos. After the Big Rang's destruction, Cadillac rescues him, making May the only test pilot from his unit to survive his assignment. This experience transforms his perspective, leading him to reflect on preserving the memories of pilots who sacrificed their lives.
Following Zeon's defeat, May flees to Axis with Cadillac and colleague Hideto Washiya. He continues working as an engineer, contributing to the redesign of the AMX-002 Neue Ziel mobile armor. He accompanies its delivery to Anavel Gato's Delaz Fleet and assists in resolving its generator instability despite limited resources.
