Description
The Spirit of the Tree of Ages is the sentient essence and spiritual core of the Sacred Tree of Ages, an ancient entity existing across multiple timelines. It remained dormant for centuries before awakening during events involving the half-demon princesses. Its manifestation connects directly to the priestess Kikyō; when she sealed Inuyasha to the tree with a sacred arrow, her spiritual energy and vital essence were absorbed. This allowed the spirit to borrow Kikyō's appearance and voice for communication.

Possessing vast knowledge of time and space, the spirit intervenes to preserve temporal integrity. After Zero cursed Rin with a fatal silver-scale curse, it instructed Jaken to seal Rin within the tree's core, halting her aging and slowing the curse. It further provided a Dream Butterfly chrysalis, directing Jaken to attach it to Setsuna's neck. The mature Dream Butterfly channeled Setsuna's sleep and dreams to Rin, sustaining her suspended animation.

The spirit repeatedly tasked the half-demon princesses—Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha—with critical missions to prevent temporal collapse. It first demanded they eliminate Kirinmaru, deemed a threat to all existence for potentially ushering in the "Degenerate Age." Upon their refusal, it subjected them to a trial against Root Head, a demon infesting the tree. Later, after Setsuna acquired the upgraded naginata Yukari no Tachikiri, the spirit revealed Rin's condition and explained Setsuna's Dream Butterfly curse was engineered to preserve Rin's life. It guided Setsuna to sever the thread of fate linking Rin and Zero, essential for breaking the curse.

As the Degenerate Age approached, the spirit collaborated with the time guardian Akuru. It informed the princesses the Grim Comet threatened the Reiwa era, endangering both past and future. It directed them to destroy the comet and remove "the foreign entity" (implied to be Kirinmaru) using the Windmill of Time. Following the comet's destruction and Kirinmaru's demise, the spirit acknowledged the princesses averted the apocalypse. It expressed gratitude to Sesshōmaru for his role and returned to dormancy, awaiting future time-altering crises.

In Japanese folklore context, the spirit aligns with kodama—tree spirits inhabiting ancient forests. Regarded as protectors when revered but capable of inflicting curses if harmed, this reflects the spirit's dual role as both guide and arbiter of consequences.
