Joe starts as an ordinary movie fan, frequenting his father's theater. During a screening starring his idol Captain Blue, a villainous force shatters the screen, abducting his girlfriend Silvia into Movieland. Pursuing her in Captain Blue's mecha, the Six Machine, Joe finds the real Captain Blue. The veteran hero gifts Joe a V-Watch, unlocking his transformation into the superhero Viewtiful Joe with the activation phrase "Henshin-a-Go-Go, Baby!".
His superhero name sparks during a clash with the Jadow agent Alastor. Witnessing Joe's combat skill, Alastor exclaims "Beautiful!" – a word Joe mishears as "Viewtiful," adopting it as his heroic identity. Joe often displays a playful, easily distracted personality, pausing for cheeseburgers and approaching peril with initial levity.
Guided by Captain Blue, Joe battles the Jadow organization across cinematic worlds to save Silvia. His V-Watch grants VFX Powers mimicking film techniques: Slow (time manipulation), Mach Speed (super-speed leaving afterimages), and Zoom In (close-up perspective amplifying attacks). These powers prove vital against diverse enemies, from foot soldiers to commanders like Charles III, Hulk Davidson, and Gran Bruce.
Joe forms key alliances, notably with Junior (Captain Blue Jr.), a younger hero initially jealous of Joe's status as Blue's successor. Junior evolves into Joe's loyal sidekick, gaining his own transformation and V-Yoyo weaponry. Joe also develops a complex rivalry with Alastor, who shifts from antagonist to anti-hero, aiding Joe despite clashing motives. After a confrontation strips Alastor of his powers, he continues offering guidance until regaining abilities during a solar eclipse.
A pivotal revelation strikes when Joe infiltrates Jadow headquarters, discovering their "Almighty Leader" is Captain Blue himself. This betrayal triggers a profound crisis. Blue seeks to destroy Joe psychologically and physically, culminating in a colossal robot duel: Joe piloting Six Machine against Blue's King Blue mecha. Empowered by allies forged on his quest, Joe triumphs, restoring Captain Blue's heroic spirit.
Following Jadow's defeat, Silvia receives her own V-Watch from Captain Blue, transforming into "Go-Go Silvia" (renamed from "Sexy Silvia" in the English dub), becoming Joe's active partner. The narrative escalates against the Gedow, an alien organization led by the Black Emperor, who corrupts movies by altering their endings, spreading darkness across dimensions. A further revelation identifies the Black Emperor as Jet Black – Joe's father and Captain Blue's former friend – corrupted by a Black V-Watch and Black Film. Joe and Silvia ultimately free Jet from this influence.
Joe matures significantly through these conflicts. His early impulsiveness and overconfidence yield to strategic thinking and emotional resilience, especially after traumatic events like Junior's temporary heroic sacrifice, which ignited focused fury against Jadow. His relationship with Silvia evolves from protective rescuer to trusted battle partner, cementing them as a formidable team against interdimensional threats.
