Description
Karl Lichter von Randoll hails from a prominent, wealthy Austrian family. Before entering Cyber Formula, he excelled in numerous sports and endeavors. His initial motivation stemmed from pursuing Asuka Sugo, whom he admired after she confronted his dismissive attitude towards the sport. This sparked an intense rivalry with Hayato Kazami, extending beyond racing to competing for Asuka's attention.
He debuted professionally in 2015 with Union Savior, replacing Knight Schumacher's championship points. Winning his first race and humiliating veteran driver Naoki Shinjō earned him the nicknames "Amadeus of the Circuit" and "Genius," establishing him as a championship contender. His aristocratic demeanor fueled a contentious rivalry with Hayato Kazami, culminating in a challenge race with Asuka's kiss as the prize, which ended dramatically when Karl crashed into the sea.
A severe accident during the 2017 British Grand Prix caused significant facial scarring. Combined with parental disapproval, this forced his temporary retirement. Witnessing Hayato's return reignited his determination; using family wealth, he privately acquired ownership of Union Savior.
In 2018, he orchestrated a masked return under the alias "Prinz Rosencreuz," echoing Knight Schumacher's earlier disguise. Failing to pre-qualify and retiring from that race exposed his identity to his parents. Following negotiations, he secured their conditional approval to continue racing. He resumed his original identity in 2019, serving simultaneously as owner and driver for Union Savior.
As team owner, he innovatively redesigned his race car by integrating competitor technologies: a modified rolling cockpit mechanism (rejecting its full implementation by choice), linear wheel systems from Sturozech Project, and a six-wheel drive system licensed from Sugo in exchange for engine supply. He maintained distinctive habits like taking tea breaks during races, sometimes in the pit lane or garage.
His later career included recruiting Naoki Shinjō as a teammate for the 2020 season after Shinjō's return from Indy racing. Following Shinjō's 2023 departure back to Aoi ZIP Formula, Karl hired female driver Sera Gellagher as a replacement. Across his journey, he evolved from an arrogant rival focused on superiority and romantic pursuit to a respected team owner-driver, demonstrating personal growth through lasting friendships forged within Cyber Formula and a deeper commitment to the sport itself.
