Description
Reverie Metherlence, known as Ren, hails from a secluded mountain village of Edel Raids. Childhood brought severe bullying from other young Edel Raids due to her status as one of the Shichiko-hoji, or Seven Glittering Jewels—a rare, powerful lineage considered an ill omen. This ostracization drove her to self-harm attempts aimed at removing her elemental gelade. Her sole support came from guardian Griina and an older Edel Raid named Sha. Sha gifted Ren a dark purple ribbon to conceal her elemental gelade and provided emotional comfort. Sha later departed for Edel Garden, leaving Ren with a promise to reunite there. This promise fueled Ren's obsession with reaching Edel Garden. After Sha's departure, bandits attacked the village. Ren was captured and sealed inside a coffin for roughly 500 years.
Sky pirate Coud Van Giruet discovered Ren during a Red Lynx airship raid. Initially hostile towards humans, believing they exploited Edel Raids as tools, Ren's perception shifted when Coud risked his life protecting her from attackers, demonstrating sincerity unlike any human she had known. This act prompted her to react with him, forming a contract enabling Coud to wield her as a wind-attribute weapon—a large sword attached to his right arm. Her weapon form varied: the anime depicted a smooth, pale cyan blade with a peach-pink edge and blue ribbon, while the manga portrayed a jagged, jade-green blade enveloped in wind. Their partnership began a journey toward Edel Garden, during which Ren gradually shed her mistrust and cold demeanor.
Traveling with Coud and their companions—Cisqua, Rowen, and Kuea from the Edel Raid protection group Arc Aile—Ren developed deep emotional bonds. Early on, she displayed stoicism and blunt honesty, rarely showing emotion. Exposure to the group's loyalty and Coud's unwavering kindness fostered significant growth. She began smiling, expressed jealousy when others grew close to Coud, and eventually acknowledged her love for him. This emotional awakening proved pivotal during confrontations; their shared feelings broke the control of the Chaos Choir, a group manipulating Edel Raids. Witnessing the death of her childhood friend Sha at Edel Garden triggered vengeful rage, quelled by Coud's physical reassurance, intensifying her devotion.
Ren's abilities focus on wind manipulation, usable offensively and defensively. Techniques like Euros Loop and Zephyrus Art require synchronization with Coud and activate through lengthy chants. Her powers deplete rapidly, necessitating frequent sleep for recharging—a trait that often interrupted activities. Her elemental gelade, a jade-green stone with blue hints, remained visibly embedded above her forehead, usually concealed by Sha's ribbon. Her Shichiko-hoji lineage granted exceptional strength and longevity uncommon among Edel Raids, raising concerns about outliving Coud. Despite such fears, their relationship culminated in mutual declarations of love and a commitment to stay together eternally.
The anime concluded with Ren departing Edel Garden to join Coud aboard the Red Lynx airship, envisioning a future "beyond the stars." The manga presented a more ambiguous ending: both vanished during Edel Garden's collapse, though later evidence suggested their survival and continued partnership. The spin-off "Flag of Blue Sky" depicted Ren at age 17, reinforcing her enduring bond with Coud and their found family.
