Description
Emeraldas is the older twin sister of Maetel and daughter of Queen Promethium, ruler of the mechanized planet La Metal. Born into royalty, she witnessed Promethium's tyrannical descent into forced mechanization of La Metal's population. Emeraldas and Maetel resisted this transformation, escaping aboard the Galaxy Express 999 after their mother's complete mechanization.

As a space pirate captain, Emeraldas commands the vessel Queen Emeraldas, marked by its skull and crossbones insignia. She adheres to a strict personal code, killing only those she judges cruel or unjust while fiercely protecting her exclusive right to the ship's emblem. Her appearance reflects Leiji Matsumoto's signature design: tall and willowy, with long hair depicted as ginger or blonde, lavender eyes, and a distinctive combat scar on her left cheek—a reminder of vulnerability she deliberately retains. She typically wears red clothing with white accessories and wields a handgun alongside a gravity saber, mastering its sword and rifle configurations with exceptional skill.

Her personality embodies fierce independence, resilience, and commitment to self-determination. She rejects mechanization entirely, seeing it as a loss of soul and autonomy, maintaining this stance even when gravely ill. Feared galaxy-wide as the "Pirate Queen" for her combat prowess, she is fundamentally driven by loneliness and a quest for purpose after personal losses. She respects those pursuing dreams against overwhelming odds, exemplified when she gifts Hiroshi Umino the Cosmo Dragoon pistol once owned by her husband, Tochiro Oyama.

Emeraldas harbors profound estrangement from her family. Her relationship with Queen Promethium is adversarial, viewing her mechanized mother as an enemy. She shares a complex, often antagonistic bond with Maetel, disagreeing with her sister's methods yet avoiding direct confrontation. Indifferent to her father, Dr. Ban, she maintains deep, unspoken loyalty to Tochiro Oyama, whose death left her emotionally isolated. She rarely interacts with their daughter, Mayu, due to unresolved grief. Her closest confidant is Captain Harlock, a fellow pirate and youth-era friend, with whom she shares mutual respect.

In *Space Symphony Maetel*, Emeraldas returns to La Metal to confront Promethium. She clashes with Maetel over their mother's true intentions, nearly killing her sister before recognizing Promethium's manipulation. Emeraldas ultimately aids Maetel in battling their mother, though Promethium survives. Her broader narrative spans the Leijiverse, including *Galaxy Express 999* and her self-titled OVA series, where her illness and moral complexity receive further exploration.
