Description
Masayuki Sanada, bearing the court title Awa-no-kami signifying his rank as Prefect of Awa, led the Sanada clan in the late Sengoku period. Father to Sanada Nobuyuki and Sanada Nobushige (known as Yukimura), he first served the Takeda clan. His early life saw him sent as a hostage to Takeda headquarters in Kai, where Takeda Shingen recognized his talents and brought him into his inner circle of young servants. After his older brothers Nobutsuna and Masateru died at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, Masayuki succeeded as clan head with Takeda Katsuyori's approval. Under the Takeda, he fought in the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima and the Battle of Mikatagahara.

Following the Takeda clan's collapse in 1582, Masayuki navigated the turbulent politics through strategic alliances and betrayals during the Tenshō-Jingo Conflict. He submitted to Oda Nobunaga, then shifted allegiance between the Uesugi, Hōjō, and Tokugawa clans to maintain his clan's independence and lands. He surrendered Numata Castle to the Uesugi, defected to the Hōjō, later betrayed them to aid the Tokugawa. By exploiting conflicts between greater powers, he retained Numata Castle and established Ueda Castle as the Sanada stronghold.

Masayuki demonstrated notable military skill defending Ueda Castle against superior forces. In 1600, preceding the Battle of Sekigahara, Tokugawa Hidetada advanced on Ueda Castle with a large army seeking a swift victory. Masayuki and his son Nobushige defended it through superior strategy. They employed delaying tactics, including "karita obiki" (cutting the grain as a goad) to harass and slow the Tokugawa advance. This successful defense prevented Hidetada from reinforcing Tokugawa Ieyasu at Sekigahara, showcasing Masayuki's ability to outmaneuver larger armies using terrain and psychological warfare.

Despite later loyalty to the Toyotomi regime, Masayuki's earlier defiance of the Tokugawa resulted in exile to Kudoyama after their Sekigahara victory, where he died in 1611. His legacy persisted as a master strategist whose cunning secured the Sanada clan's survival against powerful foes.
