Description
Mimiko is a young orphan girl living in her grandmother's bamboo grove house. When her grandmother travels to Nagasaki for her grandfather's memorial service, Mimiko stays behind alone. She confidently promises to write daily letters and manages her independence well. Her appearance features red hair in braids, black eyes, a pink dress worn over a yellow shirt, yellow shoes, and white panties. She frequently performs handstands, sometimes causing her dress to flip up.

Cheerful, optimistic, and resourceful, Mimiko displays curiosity and enthusiasm for new experiences, viewing potential encounters like burglars as exciting rather than scary. Despite her youth, she exhibits responsibility and nurturing instincts, readily assuming a motherly role for Panny, the baby panda. She proactively instructs Papa Panda on paternal duties, such as pipe smoking and job maintenance. Her independence is evident as she handles household chores, grocery shopping, and correspondence unsupervised.

Mimiko forms an unconventional family. After finding Panny asleep outside, she befriends him and later welcomes Papa Panda, who offers to be her father upon learning she is parentless. Mimiko reciprocates by offering to be Panny's mother. She maintains affectionate contact with her absent grandmother through letters detailing life with the pandas, indicating her grandmother's awareness and acceptance. Mimiko is protective and caring towards Panny, supervising his activities, involving him in routines like school, and risking herself to rescue him from dangers like a river current near a waterfall. In a later story, she extends this care to Tiny, a lost baby tiger from a circus, sheltering him and helping reunite him with his mother.

Her character design and narrative role served as a creative precursor to later Studio Ghibli protagonists. Elements like her red braids and her dynamic with pandas influenced Mei and Satsuki in *My Neighbor Totoro*. Her spirited personality and domestic independence reflect initial conceptual work by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata for an unproduced *Pippi Longstocking* adaptation.
