Gatchan, also known as Gadzilla Norimaki, is a cherub-like creature with green hair, wings, and antennae, possessing a small, baby-like body without defined genitalia. Adopted by the Norimaki family after hatching from an egg brought from the prehistoric ages by Senbei Norimaki, the character is referred to with both male and female pronouns. The name Gatchan combines Gamera and Gojira, chosen by Arale Norimaki due to her fondness for monsters. Gatchan communicates in a language of gibberish sounds called Gatchanism, understood by Arale, and exhibits a large appetite, consuming almost any material except rubber, with a particular preference for metal. The character can shoot rays from their antennae, often used as retaliation. Originally an angel sent by the God of the Galaxy to prevent human advancement by consuming metal and replicating, Gatchan’s plan failed when Senbei’s time-travel intervention brought the egg to the present. After witnessing Gatchan’s happiness in Penguin Village, the God chose not to destroy humanity. Initially a single entity, Gatchan later split into two identical beings through a chrysalis process, resulting in Gatchan #1 and Gatchan #2, and eventually multiplied to at least eight in a future timeline. Gatchan is closely associated with Arale, often following her and sharing her playful, innocent personality and interests. In the Dragon Ball series, the character demonstrates abilities such as zapping trees and eating metal, including General Blue’s car. In Dragon Ball Super, Gatchan accompanies Arale to a world invention conference in West City and consumes an entire building. The character appears in video games like Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and J-Stars Victory Vs., using the Antenna Beam in combat. Abilities include flight via wings, firing the Antenna Beam, consuming metal, transforming into a Super Saiyan-like form, and undergoing fission to replicate. Gatchan has been depicted wearing a ninja suit and wielding a small sword during war games with Arale and friends. The character’s design was inspired by Akira Toriyama’s desire to add a pet-like character to the Norimaki household, initially conceptualized as a small lizard-like monster before evolving into a cherubic form based on Toriyama’s sister’s newborn baby. Elements were also influenced by an angel-like child from Toriyama’s rejected work, Ageha Town Observation Diary.
