Description
Maya Wei was a championship racing pilot and wife of Don Wei. By 2072, she became the first woman to win three Earth Star-Racer cups and represented Earth in an interplanetary championship. During the final race against Spirit, champion of the Phils, her star-racer the Cloud II suffered engine damage. Ignoring warnings, she continued racing. While leading, her engine caught fire and exploded, causing her fatal crash. This tragedy profoundly impacted her husband and their young daughter, Eva Wei.

Her death initiated a period of estrangement between Don Wei and Eva. Don Wei carried a locked wooden box containing the only photograph of their family. Eva, motivated by a belief that winning the Great Race of Ōban would grant a wish capable of resurrecting her mother, adopted the alias "Molly" to join her father's racing team incognito.

Though deceased before the series' main events, Maya appeared through dreams, memories, and visions. Eva experienced a dream sequence featuring Maya near the Whizzing Arrow II spacecraft. Later, Eva recalled the day of Maya's death and initially blamed Spirit. Spirit subsequently used telepathy to show Eva his perspective: Maya's ship was already damaged pre-race, and he attempted to assist her before the explosion, but she waved him off.

Maya's spirit seemingly influenced Eva's piloting. During a critical maneuver in one race, Eva replicated a complex stunt identical to one Maya performed during a 2071 exhibition. Don Wei recognized the maneuver immediately, though Eva attributed it to instinct. In the final race against Kross, Maya's image appeared superimposed over Eva's as Eva evaded an attack, followed by a vision of Maya smiling at her post-victory.

A significant revelation occurred when Canaletto disclosed he orchestrated the events leading to Maya's death as part of a long-term scheme, confirming she was murdered. Following this revelation and the conclusion of the Ōban race, Don Wei and Eva visited Maya's grave together.

Physically, Maya possessed very long, straight, candy-floss pink hair reaching her waist, peach-colored skin, and small dark eyes. She wore a plum purple mini dress with puffball sleeves, matching fingerless gauntlet gloves, and knee-high boots with white soles. Her accessories included pink goggles and a white racing helmet. Distinctive facial tattoos featured a crescent moon and a stripe on her cheeks. An earlier character design depicted her dress with a lower neckline.

Her legacy included Eva inheriting her piloting skills and wearing similar pink goggles, though Eva's were not the original pair destroyed in the crash. Her tombstone listed her lifespan as 2044-2072.
