Description
Neil Leagan, a character from the "Candy Candy" manga, anime, and film "Haru no Yobigoe," belongs to the wealthy Leagan family. As Eliza Leagan's older brother, his family takes in Candice "Candy" White Ardley as Eliza's childhood companion. Neil sports a devilishly handsome look, typically wearing a haughty or smug expression. His features include brown eyes and brown hair styled in a cowlick reaching his ears. Earlier depictions show dark tan skin and chocolate-red eyes, while the 1992 version presents fair skin and brown hair.
His personality is cowardly, selfish, and prone to cruelty. Weak-willed, Neil is easily manipulated by his sister Eliza into schemes against Candy. He shows no genuine kindness, engaging in malicious acts like pouring water on Candy from a balcony upon her arrival at the Leagan estate, leading Candy to knock him down. He also throws a cat at Candy or her friend Dorothy, resulting in a broken flower vase or damaged suitcase. Neil escalates his actions by collaborating with Eliza to frame Candy for theft, resulting in her punishment and exile to the Leagan family's farm in Mexico.
Despite his antagonism, Neil develops an infatuation with Candy after recognizing her resilience and uniqueness—she is the only person who stands up to him without idolizing him. However, this attraction fails to reform his negative traits; he remains womanizing, heartless, and susceptible to Eliza's influence. In the manga's conclusion, Neil attempts to force Candy into an engagement. During the engagement party, Candy publicly rejects and humiliates him. Distraught, Neil retreats to a balcony where Eliza consoles him, suggesting they find "other girls better than Candy." He then accompanies her to their Florida vacation home, confirming his persistent weakness and lack of growth.
Across all media, Neil serves primarily as an antagonist whose character undergoes no significant positive development, consistently highlighting his flaws and dependence on Eliza for direction.
