Susano, son of deities Izanagi and Izanami, is consumed by profound grief after his mother's unexpected death. Forbidden by his father from seeking Izanami in the afterlife, he reacts with destructive tantrums. A dream visitation from his mother, describing her peaceful existence in a heavenly realm and gifting him a protective red amulet, ignites his core motivation: a quest to reunite with her.
His personality blends immense physical strength with impulsiveness and a capacity for kindness. Demonstrating his protective nature early on, he saves a rabbit named Akahana from a bullying tiger named Taro. He strives to heed his mother's teachings about balancing a "kind heart" with a "strong body," yet his overwhelming grief fuels a stubborn, rebellious streak, leading him to defy his father's direct commands.
Accompanied primarily by Akahana, Susano journeys through mythologically inspired realms. In the Land of Night, ruled by his brother the Crystal Prince, he faces imprisonment and acquires a magical crystal ball. His travels next take him to the Land of Fire, where he confronts an oppressive Fire God. During this battle, he gains another companion, the strong but simple giant TitanbÅ. Proceeding to the Land of Light, governed by his sister the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, his rash actions cause significant disruption, resulting in his banishment.
Arriving in Izumo Province, Susano encounters Princess Kushinada, who tells him of the eight-headed dragon Orochi terrorizing the region and consuming her seven sisters. Developing a protective affection for Kushinada, whom he finds reminiscent of his mother, Susano shifts his primary goal. His personal search for Izanami transforms into a mission to protect Kushinada and slay Orochi.
The confrontation with Orochi becomes a significant trial. Susano employs strategy, using large quantities of sake to intoxicate the creature. During the prolonged battle, he suffers setbacks, including the breaking of his sword. Ultimately, the protective amulet gifted by his mother transforms into a magical dagger. Wielding this weapon, he climbs the final head to deliver the decisive blow, achieving victory.
This journey marks Susano's evolution. He transforms from a grief-stricken, destructively impulsive child into a figure capable of channeling his strength and determination towards protecting others. His experiences across the various lands and the final battle against Orochi demonstrate his growing maturity, responsibility, and willingness to confront overwhelming threats for those he cares about.
