Coelho (Akahana) serves as Susanoo's constant companion, present beside him during pivotal moments. This small rabbit features a primarily black coat and an angular, triangular design that conveys speed and intense emotions like panic or surprise. He speaks directly to Susanoo and others. Early interactions reveal his playful side, engaging in activities like wrestling improbable victories against animals such as a tanuki. Despite this playfulness, vulnerability surfaces quickly, especially when targeted by the tiger Taro during a chase. When Susanoo decides to seek his deceased mother, the rabbit expresses hesitation about the dangerous voyage. His commitment emerges accidentally; startled by backing into a prickle bush during a conversation about their destination, he resolves to join. This marks his transition into a steadfast companion role. Throughout the journey, the rabbit offers companionship and minor assistance. He witnesses Susanoo's battle with a giant fish, provides encouragement, and later joins him underwater attempting to help. He also fulfills a comic relief function, reacting to events and dangers with exaggerated expressions. Accompanying Susanoo into the crystalline cave in the Land of Night ruled by the Crystal Prince (Tsukuyomi), the rabbit shows visible distress and agitation when Susanoo becomes encased in ice. After this encounter, he receives a protective crystal ball meant to safeguard the travelers. The rabbit remains present for subsequent major events: the confrontation with the Fire God in the drought-stricken Land of Fire, the visit to the Land of Light governed by Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, and the arrival in Izumo Province. There, he witnesses Susanoo's encounter with Princess Kushinada and learns about the threat of the eight-headed dragon, Yamata no Orochi. During the extended battle against Orochi, the rabbit primarily observes rather than directly participates in combat. His presence continues until the resolution of Susanoo's quest and the dragon's defeat.
